Biochemistry versus chemistry; a decision I must make.
As an eager freshman, I have the ability and capacity to learn. I also have the ability to change what I want to learn based on what capabilities I believe I can handle. Although changing my major isn't exactly what I planned, I feel that it is the best thing for me.
Many might ask, "what's the difference between biochemistry and chemistry anyway?" Well, for those that have asked this question, the difference is biology. As a biochemistry major, biology is just as much of a course load as chemistry is.
In comparison, throughout school I have heard the phrase, "You're either an algebra or geometry person" and this can be applied to biology and chemistry, as well. Personally, I love chemistry. Also, I have a passion for learning biology, but the complexity of it is simply overwhelming for me. This can be applied interchangeably.
So the ultimate question: "Should I change my major?"
I tirelessly ask myself this question and repeatedly can't find the answer. Another question I associated with this is: "Does changing my major classify me as a failure?" I know that people get to college where it's a different environment and they grow into being different people, but since I thought of my college career biology has been the plan as well as medical school.
When someone asks me, "What's your major?" and I simply reply, "biochemistry" they are immediately in awe. Yes, biochemistry is a workload, but it isn't impossible. I believe that I have the ability to pursue a biochemistry major, but is biology a subject that I want to study?
Many of my friends have switched their majors because they feel that they cannot handle the workload that is associated with it, but I, on the other hand, am considering it because my passion for biology has slightly diminished. I also feel that the stigmatism of changing my major, such as: what will people think of me?
After thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that I shouldn't even consider that people think. If I believe that I don't want to pursue biology, then I don't have to. The decision is solely determined by me. So, if anyone else is having the same issues as I then don't let anyone tell you that you don't have the ability to change what you believe is best for you.
