Take This, Not That

Brace yourselves, LSU students: We are nearly halfway through the 2014 fall semester.

Most of us are taking midterms and some of us are realizing that it is time to get serious. The most eye-opening event that occurs at this point in the game is scheduling. That’s right. We will all be scheduling NEXT semester’s classes sooner than you might imagine (unless of course you are graduating in December).

It is critical to start thinking about which classes you plan on scheduling ahead of time so that you are prepared with a list and some backup options. Be sure to schedule the classes you need to take in order to stay on track with your degree. But if you have a little wiggle room, check out some of the interesting classes our awesome university has to offer.

KIN 1155: Jogging

Looking to get in shape? This one hour class consists of a pass/fail grading system and requires that you run a few times per week. Grading is based on attendance and participation, making it the perfect class to take if you need some motivation to get on your feet.

PSYC 4039: Madness and Medicine

If you enjoy psychology, this is the way to go. The three hour credit class analyzes the history of medical treatments for mental disorders. Allen Baumeister is an enthusiastic professor that genuinely loves teaching, so this class even better than it sounds.

THTR 2031: Aerial Silks

Taught by a former movement director for a dance company in Los Angeles, this is arguably one of the most interesting classes available. The course is a one hour credit but packs tons of fun with great exercise. You can take it over and over, so many students develop serious aerial skills. Of course, beginners are always welcome.

KIN 1125: Golf

Brush up on your golf skills or learn how to play for the first time. This class is a one hour credit that is great for beginners and more advanced players alike. After all, who wouldn’t want to play golf as schoolwork?

POLI 4039: Southern Politics

If you haven’t taken a class with or at least met Wayne Parent, you are missing out. He is one of the most hilarious professors you will come across at LSU, and Southern Politics is absolutely his niche. It is a three hour credit course and involves a fair amount of reading, but you will not be disappointed. Whether you enjoy politics or a good laugh, this class is a great option.

THTR 1131: Ballet

Prior dance experience is not needed for this one hour class. While it may not be the traditional elective, ballet can certainly provide you with a way to blow off some steam while learning one of the most beautiful forms of dance. This class will make for a very interesting semester.

Whether you are a freshman scheduling your second semester of school or a senior scheduling your last semester of school, having a little fun won’t kill you. Fill up twelve hours with important classes but make your elective one you’ll remember.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
