This was definitely a hard thing to do because honestly, I love all the songs from Taylor Swift's seventh studio album. I know a lot of Swifties have different rankings and it depends on the person, but these are the rankings I would give all 18 songs from the Lover album.
#18: It's Nice To Have A Friend
"Light pink sky, up on the roof, sun sinks down, no curfew. Twenty questions, we tell the truth, you've been stressed out lately? Yeah me too"
The way I would describe this song is just...weird. It's definitely different than her other music on the album and in the past. It is a little jingle-like song to jam to, but something about it just kind of creeps me out honestly. It's a good song but has never been a favorite of mine.
#17: False God
"I know heaven's a thing, I go there when you touch me, honey hell is when I fight with you"
This song is slower and has a kind of jazzy sound to it. I really like what she did vocally on it, but it's never been one to really appeal to me as a top 5 on the album. It's definitely the type of song to wind down to while taking a bath with a glass of wine by your side.
#16: The Man
"They'd say I hustled, put in the work, they wouldn't shake their heads and question how much of this I deserve"
Okay so this is DEFINITELY an unpopular opinion amongst the Swiftie fandom, but I can't really get pumped or dance to this song like some others can. I will say one thing though: Taylor SNAPPED. This song is about how the public would see her if she was a man and how powerful she would be. You go girl!
#15: Miss Americana & The Hearbreak Prince
"American glory faded before me, now I'm feeling hopeless, ripped up my prom dress. Running through rose thorns, I saw the scoreboard and ran for my life"
If you really listen to the lyrics of this song, you can understand she's talking about current political situations in America. It has a strong message behind it, but again, I just can't bop to it. I can confirm though it is a good song to listen to while driving with the windows down on a nice day.
#14: Afterglow
"Hey, it's all me, in my head. I'm the one who burned us down, but it's not what I meant, sorry that I hurt you"
This is actually already getting hard to do. I love this song a lot because it's relatable on so many levels. I'm an overthinking and sometimes that stirs up problems in my relationship, which I personally feel like Taylor is singing about in this song. The only reason this song is so low on the rankings is because I feel like it can tire me out sometimes, but it's definitely one to vibe to.
#13: I Forgot That You Existed
"And I would've stuck around for ya, would've fought the whole town, so yeah. Would've been right there front row, even if nobody came to your show, but you showed who you are…."
She didn't hold back in this one, and honestly it was the PERFECT song to start off the album after reputation. It's a simple song, but definitely gets the point across that she's done and over the whole mess a certain someone started for her in the past.
#12: I Think He Knows
"He got my heartbeat, skipping down 16th avenue got that, oh! I mean. Wanna see what's under that attitude. Like, I want you, bless my soul…"
This is a cute little bop that I feel like gets semi-underappreciated by fans. It honestly makes me want to dance around and there are perfect parts of the song you can just yell and get hyped up to.
#11: ME! (featuring Brendon Urie)
"I know I tend to make it about me, I know you never get just what you see, but I will never bore you, baby…"
This was the lead single from the album and really gets people on their feet. It's a cute little bop about loving yourself and how there's no one else out there like you. RIP "Hey kids, spelling is fun." That is all.
#10: You Need To Calm Down
"You just need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace and control your urges to scream about all the people you hate, 'cause shade never made anybody less gay"
Taylor snapped…again, and I am HERE FOR IT. This is an actual BOP about how anti-LGBTQ people just need to chill and stop hating people for loving who they love.
#9: Daylight
"Luck of the draw only draw the unlucky, and so I became the butt of the joke. I wounded the good and I trusted the wicked, clearin' the air, I breathed in the smoke"
This song is honestly and emotional. Taylor sings about how she's gone through bad times, bad friends, and she's finally free of it all and can only see the good now…which is her lover, Joe Alwyn. Words cannot do this song justice so go listen to it to see what I mean.
#8: The Archer
"I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost. The room is on fire, invisible smoke, and all of my heroes die all alone. Help me hold onto you…"
The first time I heard this song, I cried. As a long-time fan of Taylor's, I could really tell that this song is about her insecurities after her reputation had been tarnished and she had been through rough times in life. It is one of the most emotional songs I've heard from her.
#7: Soon You'll Get Better (featuring Dixie Chicks)
"I know delusion when I see it in the mirror. You like the nicer nurses, you make the best of a bad deal, I just pretend it isn't real…."
Talking about emotional songs, this is by far the most emotionally raw songs Taylor has ever written. It is about her mom's diagnosis of cancer and how she keeps telling herself that her mom will get better soon.
#6: Paper Rings
"Which takes me back to the color that we painted your brother's wall, honey without all the exes, fights, and flaws we wouldn't be standing here so proud…."
If you get through this song and don't ship Taylor and Joe, then you may to listen to it again. It's a cute love bop to jump and dance to and definitely always gets me hyped.
#5: London Boy
"Stick with me, I'm your queen, like a Tennessee Stella McCartney on the Heath, just wanna be with you…"
Yup definitely a bop. Not only is the outake in the intro HILARIOUS, but this song is one to sway and dance to and just gets you going. It even gets my husband singing, which is a big deal because he's not a huge Taylor fan like me.
#4: Cornelia Street
"We bless the rains on Cornelia Street, memorize the creaks in the floor. Back when we were card sharks, playing games, I thought you were leading me on…"
Ahh, a glimpse into how much Taylor's love story with Joe has blossomed. You can definitely feel the love in this song. This is a catchy, lowkey tune that will get you singing along by the end of it.
#3: Cruel Summer
"So cut the headlights, summer's a knife, I'm always waiting for you just to cut to the bone. Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes, and if I bleed you'll be the last to know…"
This is the BEST song to jam to in the summer. Nice weather, driving, windows down, this song blasting? PER-FECT. That's really all I'll say. Go listen to it in your car with the windows down while driving. Seriously. Go do it.
#2: Lover
"We could let our friends crash in the living room. This is our place, we make the call. And I'm highly suspicious that everyone who sees you wants you…"
Some may say that having this song as my runner-up to my #1 is "basic." This song really sums up the entire album, which is probably why she named the album after this song. Lover also holds a special place in my heart because it was the first song my son heard after he was born, and now it is one of his favorite songs to listen to.
#1: Death By A Thousand Cuts
"Our songs, our films, united, we stand. Our country, guess it was a lawless land. Quiet my fears with the touch of you hand, paper cut stings from our paper-thin plans…"
MY FAVORITE TAYLOR SWIFT SONG. EVER. Something about this song makes me love it so much. I don't know if it's the lyrics, the music, or the vocals. I just feel like this song is a masterpiece overall, and it is definitely underrated.
