Why I Love Wilkes University

Keep calm and Colonel on.

Why I Love Wilkes University
Andy Palumbo

Just about everyone loves their university for one reason or another. After all, who would attend a university they weren't happy at? Wilkes University has so much to offer and I love it for more reasons than one.

1. It's very unique.

Not only is Wilkes one of few universities not built on a hill (HOORAY for that!), but it is also located in the historic area of Wilkes-Barre. Because of this, many buildings are beautifully constructed and you would never imagine that students learn and live there. Many of the residence halls are renovated mansions, with rooms that could contain a fire place, intricate detailing, stained glass windows, or bay windows. Some of these buildings are actually used as classrooms, such as Kirby Hall. There are several beautiful locations outdoors on campus as well, which are perfect for studying on a warm fall or spring day.

2. It's a perfect size.

The campus is small, but not too small. Professors know your name (or nickname) and eat in the cafeteria just like you. You can run into just about everyone in Starbucks, including the President. However, the campus is also large enough that there is plenty to do. There are over 80 clubs, you are still constantly meeting new people, and it's big enough that you can usually avoid the people you don't want to see.

3. Residence halls

While I already mentioned that many of the residence halls are unique, they are also a great size. Most of the rooms on campus are easily double the size of what you would find anywhere else. Upperclassmen can stay on campus without risk of losing their housing, and can even get apartment style rooms, with separate bedrooms, a bathroom, and a kitchen.

4. Everyone cares.

The University is really a giant family. There are so many people you can reach out to, even for non-class related issues. Professors are more than willing to meet with you outside of their office hours and truly want you to do well in your classes. Speaking of which, you're pretty much guaranteed to actually be able to see your professors at their office hours, because there aren't lines of students ahead of you.

5. Opportunities are endless.

There are so many things to do at Wilkes, and you have a pretty good chance of actually being able to do what you want to. You're able to do research with professors, be a teaching assistant in labs, get a job in one of many different areas, become and RA, be in Student Government, or even start a new club, and opportunities like these are just as easily accessible for sophomores as it is for seniors. The opportunities available are truly up to you to do with what you wish.

After spending time at Wilkes, I can't imagine being anywhere else. Wilkes has provided me with so many experiences and opportunities that I would not trade for the world. I have met amazing professors, staff members, and friends, and I wouldn't trade my time at Wilkes for the world. Go Colonels!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
