Liberal Arts: ‘Nuff said. Finding a place I was not going to have to struggle through Calc 1 or Stats was a definite concern. My brain just does not work that way, and many others can agree with me. Going to a school where I can take a math class about art, or a class taught by the President of my university, or take a whole class about New Orleans - with beignets to boot. Liberal arts schools are a special place that cultivate individuals of unique thinking and a community of unique opportunities. My school demonstrates that every day with the discussion in classes, interdisciplinary thinking, and, of course, the little quirks that make it somewhere exceptional.
Going it Alone: Coming to SU by myself was a major perk. Going to a small high school, seemingly half my class went to Texas A&M and the other half U of H - and good for them if they are happy there. I would not have been. Not to say I did not want to see my closest friends ever again, but I definitely wanted something of my own, something where I could grow and explore life; something that happened to be laid hidden in the tiny town of Georgetown, TX. I don’t even think I was “scared” in the first couple days because I knew everyone else was looking for new friendships as well. I instantly had eight people I lived with to call friends and from there everything just sort of fell into place. Now, I am not saying I am a social butterfly, but I enjoyed these new people much more than hanging out with the same people from high school, doing the same things as in high school. And I will enjoy getting to meet even more people in round two.
Involved: Can “So Involved On Campus, You Need An Overpriced Planner” be the hashtag for my life? Because SU is what made that happen. As a part of getting out there, and due to my University’s small size, I found myself able to join anything and everything I am passionate about. I work multiple on-campus jobs throughout the year, hold leadership positions, and am a member of several organizations on campus. I love it. At a bigger school I would be lucky to do two different things let alone anything else. It keeps my life hectic, but keeps it energized. to conclude:
1. I do utilize my overpriced but life-saving planner.
2. I have found myself napping a lot this year to keep myself going, but … are naps really a bad thing?! If so, I’m not sure if I want to be a good person.
When you come to college there are always have people telling you that you will find the right place. I never really thought much of it, school is school - I would make friends, take classes, and have fun. Well, I have done that and more, just like I know others have, all because their school has become their home too.
