"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."
--John Quincy Adams
Like anything in life, college is full of pros and cons. Although, how you thrive under pressure or strive to be better even when you are doing well is what truly makes you a leader.
Being a leader is so much more than telling others what to do and gaining followers just because you're popular. Leadership is more than a title. You are willing to be a role model; you live an example worth following. You have to inspire others, to dream that they can make anything possible.
When I thrust myself into different leadership positions on University of Tampa's campus and in my personal life, I try to be a servant visionary. To me, that means being an individual who is willing to take charge and implement change. You do it to better your community and yourself; however, you do not do it solely to advance your own standing or ideals.
Through the various leadership trips I've gone on in my last three semesters at UT, I have experienced a big change in myself, particularly with my confidence in my abilities. Also, I've realized what I really want to do with my life. My sole goal in life is to motivate others. Seeing hardworking, optimistic people around me makes me better. Leadership is about knowing the way and being able to show others the way as well.
We all so have much power within ourselves, and combined with other like-minded individuals, we are able to do wonders.
One experience I've had at UT that has truly opened my eyes more about being a leader is my involvement in Greek Life. This weekend, I got to go on a retreat called Relevant, and yet again I was overly impressed with the caliber of students at my university. I am so proud to be a part of this community of students.
I know that fraternities/sororities are viewed somewhat negatively in society, and on some campuses there have even been many issues among organizations. However, that has not been my experience. Greek Life has taught me that it is a privilege to wear out letters, because not everyone is a part of this community. But even when we are not wearing letters, our actions will reflect what our own values are.
The same is true with being a of leader. Even when you think no one is watching, they are.
I love being a leader because it's something that everyone can do. We can motivate others around us, we can give back to our communities, and we just have the opportunities to grow.
