We’ve read about it a hundred times. We’ve watched it another thousand. Every other song on the radio tells us about the ‘crazy little thing called love’.
What is this feeling? Your stomach is churning, in the good way. Constant smiles. Giggles. Swooning. Google eyes. Frazzled. To quote Thumper in Bambi, “you’re twitterpated.”
Congratulations, you’re in love.
In that moment not even gravity can stop you from falling deeper and deeper. For the first time you’re devoting your whole heart and soul, your physical and mental well being, into someone else. Your happiness is now linked and tied to another person.
Every love song on the radio makes you giddy. The sunshine on your skin makes you tingle. The thought of the other person makes you wear a smile from ear to ear.
You fight. You fight hard. You fight over who should hang up first. You fight over who loves whom more. Of course you’ll fight about more serious things like if 3,000 miles away is too far, but you conclude that true love will prevail.
You pick your song. You pick your place. You know each other’s deepest, darkest secrets. You know the way his eyes flutter open in the morning when the sun graces their cheeks. You memorize the freckles on his shoulder that mirror a skeptical of stars in the sky.
To the other, you are perfect. Your flaws, your past, your insecurities are forgiven. The way you snore is adorable. The way you laugh is unforgettable. You're constant need for food and naps isn't laziness; it is simply you. They would never want to change whatever makes up the imperfect pieces of you. Those are the pieces that make you perfect.
Being in love is, honestly, terrifying. The vulnerability in the moments of falling in love is authentic and irreplaceable. It is not until tears are streaming down your face in heartbreak that you realize you will never truly feel that way again.
First love is magical. Your last love is magical. All love is magical. Love cannot be burdened. Love cannot be marked my numbers or gender. It takes on a mind of its own, doing what it please when it pleases. Love is all consuming.
Most important, you can fall out of love. That is okay. Sometimes it is inevitable for feelings to change and time to grow people apart. This does not make you weak. This does not make your love any less real or important.
When you get the chance, bottle love up. Drink that magic in your youth and sip from it in your elder. Those feelings, those emotions, that’s how you should feel with the person you’re with every day for the rest of your life.
