So I’m sorry, but this article might end up being a rant. By now, you must have heard about the awful news of the mass shooting that happened at a club in Orlando, Florida, that killed 50 people. This was terrorist attack on innocent Americans and was a big blow to the LGBTQ+ community. Pulse is a gay night club. I am getting very upset with all the attacks in our country. For this article, I want to express my anger and frustration over the mistreatment and outright targeting of the LGBTQ+ community. I find it absolutely ridiculous. Love is love.
In the past six years alone there have been about 50 incidences of violence against the LGBTQ+ community, most that have resulted in murder. Hate crimes like these really make me angry.
What have these innocent people ever done to get themselves murdered? Is it just because they are different than you? We meet people every day that are different than us, yet I don’t see us murdering each other in broad daylight. So, I’m sorry if I can’t understand. They are people just like us. They do not deserve to be beaten to death, stabbed, shot, or even burned to death. Nobody deserves that.
They also do not deserve to be treated with disrespect. I do not understand why people are so worried that someone else’s lifestyle is going to influence your child. I would say that your ignorance and hatred is what is going to influence your child. When children come of age, they themselves can pick the lifestyle they will live by.
People need to stop worrying about how other people will affect their lives and worry about the decisions they make in their day-to-day lives. Yes, children tend to pick up certain things from the outside world, but it helps them get ready for when they are older. For instance, there is a gay couple on a TV show your child is watching and has been watching for a while; that does not mean that your child is going to be gay, but what it does mean is that your child will know that these are just normal people just like them and will not treat them any different. Your child will have resources that will help them accept others if you can’t teach them a simple fact in life. “Treat others as you want to be treated.”
At the end of the day, people are people. You shouldn’t hate them or target them based on their race or sexuality. We need to protect each other as people. People who are part of the LGBTQ+ community deserve the same rights that we do. Aren’t they people too? It hurts me to think that we are denying them, as a country, the rights that are given to us by the Constitution, because they have a different way of living than the majority of the law makers. We need to demand equal rights and safety to our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters.
