7 Reasons Why I love My Sorority
Alpha Sigma Alpha

I began my freshman year with this preconceived idea that sororities are just groups of girls who enjoy shouting and partying together. I didn’t know anything about the true benefits of being in a sorority and the greek community until I watched all my friends go through formal recruitment in the fall. I got a glimpse of what it really means to be in a sorority and realized it was much more than just having a group of friends. I decided to go through informal spring recruitment and offer myself to the greek community. After a semester of being in my sorority, I finally have time to reflect on why I love my sorority.

  • I love my sorority because I can honestly call it my home away from home. Going away from college is tough for many people, especially when you’ve lived in one place all your life. Finding that feeling of being home is hard especially when you’re hours away from your hometown. A house is a physical place of residence, but a home is a feeling of affection where love thrives and people feel at ease. My sorority has become my home and my sisters have become my family, even though I am hundreds of miles away from my permanent house.
  • I love my sorority because they care about my academics. College gives you the freedom to skip class and not be pressured by your parents to do your homework. My freshman year was tough because I didn’t know what my best study techniques were and I hated going to my 8 A.Ms. It’s tempting to skip out on that mymathlab assignment or skip class “just this one time” because you have so much freedom, but my sorority pushes me to achieve my academic goals. My big is a year older than me, but we have the same major - therefore I know she is always there to help me with projects or give me advice when I need it. My sorority has surrounded me with girls who care about their grades and motivate me to study and improve my GPA, whether it be helping each other with study guides or finding a group of girls to head over to the library together.
  • I love my sorority because of our philanthropies. It’s amazing and inspiring to watch girls become so involved with volunteering and our philanthropies. My sorority gives me the opportunity to give back to my community and make an impact in the lives of others. I am beginning to see that there are so many genuine women in a world that is so big and scary.
  • I love my sorority because of all my sisters. My sorority gave me the opportunity to meet hundreds of new women and I have made friendships with girls who bring out the best in me. I have made friends with sisters who I know are always there for me, whether it be a late night movie or a lunch date, I know I’m never alone through all the stress and drama of college.
  • I love my sorority because of the opportunities it gives me to get involved. There’s an endless amount of leadership opportunities and organizations to join when it comes to being greek. There’s committees within the sorority, leadership organizations that invite all of fraternity and sorority life, and service opportunities given to every member of the greek community.
  • I love my sorority because of the crafts. Every sorority girls is equipped with their fair share of paints, canvases, and paddles. I love creating crafts for my sisters and giving them a small act of kindness; whether it be a frame or canvas with an inspiring quote. Personal gift giving is a specialty of mine.
  • I love my sorority because I’m proud to wear my letters. My sorority doesn’t necessarily define who I am, but has made me the person I am today. I proudly wear my letters knowing that I’m apart of an amazing organization that makes me a better woman everyday. We have chapters located all throughout the US and I am apart of something bigger than I thought I could ever be a part of.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
