To some people, "Adventure Time" is a silly children’s cartoon. To others, it is not only one of the best animated shows on television, but also one of the best shows on television, period. While some may argue that shows like "Steven Universe" or "Gravity Falls" may be better than "Adventure Time," I still believe it will always be one of my favorite shows.
A brief history of this fantastic show - "Adventure Time" was first generated by series creator Pendleton Ward 10 years ago in 2006. Ward was working for Nickelodeon at the time when he made a short film titled “Adventure Time” in 2007. It turned out that this wacky little short became very popular among viewers. Because of this success, Ward decided to pitch giving the short its own animated series on Nickelodeon. Unfortunately for Ward, this idea was quickly turned down. Not knowing what to do, Ward went to Cartoon Network to pitch the series and the rest became history. "Adventure Time" has been on the air ever since 2010, and quickly became one of the network’s biggest hits.
The show itself can be described as silly, colorful and just plain "out there." However, it also has more depth than most people think. The original premise is that Finn the human and his magical talking dog Jake go on adventures such as saving princesses, exploring dungeons and battling evil. This theme of adventure was prominent in the first few seasons, but as the series progressed, so did its themes. Now the series has many interconnected stories and arcs that touch on more mature themes, such as dealing with death, relationships, mental illness and so much more. Audiences and critics alike have praised the series for its color, imagination, creativity and storytelling.
I believe that at its core, "Adventure Time’s" many characters make the series so great. For starters, Finn the human is a strong, kindhearted boy whose only purpose is to do good deeds. Jake the dog is Finn’s best friend and can stretch into any shape he wants. He can sometimes be naive, but his intentions are pure. There is also Princess Bubblegum, who is the leader of the Candy Kingdom. She is rather wise for her age and was Finn’s primary love interest for quite some time. Then, there are the two most popular characters on the show - Ice King and Marceline the Vampire Queen. Ice King is one of the main antagonists and Marceline is just a secondary character. However, they both have such tragic backstories and relationships that make the series so great.
The reason why "Adventure Time" is so revered is not only the color, acting, or animation. People love it because of how the ambiguous the show still remains to them. Ward and other writers purposely shroud the series in mystery, leaving audiences in suspense after almost every episode. "Adventure Time" is a great show and should be watched by all.
