I used to write all the time -- in all my free time, I should say. A light bulb at the top of my head could've popped up at any moment when I was watching TV, eating dinner, or getting ready to go out. Now, I pretty much only write essays. Thesis after thesis. Have I mentioned that I only write about literature from the 18th to 19th century? Let's put it this way, I have lost my creative spark. If you've been here, you know how I'm feeling.
Creative sparks used to come to me all the time, and now I am rekindling with the feeling of how it feels to write again! One way that has helped me significantly would have to be writing poetry. Poetry? you say. Yes, poetry. No, I'm not talking about Shakespeare; I am talking about the real deal. Writing poetry about your experiences. Writing poetry isn't harmful, it will not make you soft, and no, it will not make you feminine (yes, unfortunately I have heard that before). Poetry will help strengthen your love for writing again! It will also show you a side of yourself you didn't even know existed.
If you aren't used to writing poetry, free writing can also help with creativity loss. Writing something as simple as 'the sky is blue' can definitely turn into writing a poem about being sad, a sad event, a negative time in your life. Maybe you need to release some of that sadness! Your writing doesn't have to be about anything sad like the example I gave. Write about a topic you're passionate about. Write about a topic that makes you happy!
Writing about the way you feel about certain subjects in the world -- the news, current events, or very personal experiences -- will help you unleash your spark. If you feel that you've lost your spark, don't worry, it's still in there. Using a laptop, iPad, iPhone, Kindle, or going back to the old fashioned way -- a pencil or pen and paper -- you can be sure to deliver your best work. Just remember: no holding back. If you hold back from your work, you will never be able to tap into your full potential! Discover what you have to offer and write!
I never really thought that writing poetry or free writing would help me get my writing spark back. Writing essays for classes aren't so bad, but where did my creativity go? That was the question. I never wanted to lose my creative spark, but that's what happens when reality hits and there is no way to really stop your daily cycle of events.
Writing is a pastime. It should be fun and filled with creativity! If you've lost your creative spark, hopefully, you regain it with a little poetry and free writing. Whether you're sitting down in your living room, taking the train to your friend's house, or shopping in the mall, any time is the time to write. I'm not lying to you when I say the spark will come back. Anytime and anywhere!
