I feel sadly that we're reading a place in the 21st century where our
language is losing its meaning. We in twenty-first century America are
so easily entertained and satisfied by recycled ideas for postage stamp
prices and true originality is rarely recognized with the credit of
which it is deserving. There are exceptions of course such as the
profound and fantastic musical Hamilton. However I fear it will only be a
matter of time until we are flooded with a million cheap knock offs
trying to freshen up this beautiful existing idea for profit by
nostalgia.
I also feel that in our society in general today we
have become desensitized to words of power. Everything is “awesome”. We
“love” everything we like. We have even developed that trend of calling
things we enjoy “everything”. There is no power in the word or the pen
anymore. We have numbed ourselves through over indulgence in our
language like a junk with his fix, forever unable to achieve his first
high. We have nothing to say which truly carries the weight of passion.
So, how do we take our language back? How do we begin re-sensitizing ourselves to the depth and power of the experiences we have and the words we chose? I think the answer is to be intentional in our expression, and to think a bit more deeply about the value we ascribe through the words we chose. We need to start losing our metaphorical tolerance if you will. If we do not, I fear our world will continue to become more dull with each passing year. I want my children one day to grow up in a deeper world than we live in, not a more shallow, weak minded one.
