There is no denying it. Having a random roommate in college is like getting set up on a blind date hoping the person is "the one" and also finding out you are married to that person for a year.
Having a random roommate turns out different for everyone. Some people end up with someone who is their exact opposite in all the wrong ways. Others, like myself, are blessed with a perfect match. For us the five-question roommate questionnaire worked.
Walking in at the beginning of freshman year, I wasn't so sure about the random who was going to be living next to me for a year. When I met her, it was awkward. We didn't click right away like some girls on our hall. That first night we barely talked, and it stayed like that for a while. Small conversations took place every day, though, and that allowed us to begin to get to know each other. At the end of the first semester we had grown closer. It wasn't a deep wonderful friendship, but we felt comfortable with each other.
Coming back after Christmas, I was thrilled to see my roommate. I had genuinely missed her over the holidays. Throughout the spring semester, our friendship grew drastically. I was much more comfortable around her, and we began to laugh often and share stories. It was wonderful. Our relationship had never had conflicts or stress, but now it felt like a true friendship.
When it came time in the spring to think about next year's living plans, it was a relief for both of us when we decided we wanted to stay together. We will be in an apartment next year with two of our mutual friends, and I am so excited for our next year together.
For some people, the random roommate system is a disaster. They tolerate each other, but they never truly become friends. I am so thankful that I was blessed with such a wonderful person to share my first year of college with. Although having a random roommate wasn't the instant friendship that I thought it would be, in the end it turned out to be a deep, true friendship. I can come to my roomie and tell her anything.
So, Adrianna, thank you for being my random. But thank you so much more for becoming my friend. I can't wait for the next year with you.
