The past couple of months have been super hard on me. The other day, I went to text one of my best friends about trying a $19 class pass, only to remember that she lives in another state about 1,000 miles away. As a transfer, one of the hardest things I have had to deal with is missing my old friends from last year. I have no clue why it has been hitting me right now, considering it's been almost a year since I have moved, but as the one year mark comes closer, I miss them more and more.
Luckily I was blessed enough to make some amazing friends my freshman year, but now the entire group is split up and doing different things. All of our lives were intertwined during one of the most pivotal moments of our life, and now all of us barely speak on a daily basis. This isn't to say that we aren't still friends and that their relationships do not mean a lot to me, it's just that we are in different spaces in our lives right now.
Obviously, we are all busy doing whatever it is we do now, we all have our own separate lives and that sometimes make it impossible to share more than a couple of quick texts a week. Even with technology on our side, distance is still the winner in this battle. It can be disheartening but that is the reality of the situation.
I recently saw one of my friends during a week-long visit and afterward, I was so sad she couldn't stay here and live with me again. I was so happy to have some sense of normalcy back, that when the time came to say goodbye, I was devastated.
Ever since then, I have this nagging thought in the back of my head about what would have happened had we all stayed in the same place. I look at their Instagrams and tweets, and I feel sad because this time last year, we were in the pictures together.
I have made some amazing friends this year, don't get me wrong, but sharing your freshman year with a group of people really is life changing. It's so weird to want to do something and reach for your phone, only to realize that you live in a different timezone.
I know that all of the change was for the better, and that I can get on a flight whenever I want, but sometimes it really isn't that simple. It also isn't any use to dwell on the past, because it hinders me from making new memories with them. My time spent with them from now on will be extra special, and I have to remember that.
Who knows, by some twist of fate we might end up reunited again after college? The world is a weird place and the universe works in really strange ways. It's alright to miss your long-distance friends, and it's going to be hard, but true friendships will persevere.
