If there’s one thing I understand, it’s keeping up a long-distance relationship. No, not with my significant other, but with my best friend. My best friend and I have been separated for six years with some occasional summer visits thrown in. Even though it is undeniably hard to go months without seeing my best friend, somehow the distance makes us even closer.
We basically grew up together
Okay so maybe we technically didn’t grow up together, but we met in grade school and were forced to spend every moment together by our parents. Even though we openly hated each other at the time, somehow we ended up best friends. There’s something about growing up with someone that makes them really hard to let go of.
We didn’t go to high school together
Going to separate schools actually made us closer. At the end a week, we were able to swap stories about what was happening in our schools because we already didn’t know what was going on.
We’re always excited to see each other
Living on opposite sides of the states basically ensures that we don’t see each other every week. That being said, whether it’s three months or a year, we are always ecstatic to see each other. Greetings never fall short of jumping on each other and crying. Because we are so excited to see one another, we are attached at the hip the whole time. I’ve never known someone where I can spend so much time with them and not get sick of them.
We can go days or weeks without talking
Just because we live so far apart, doesn’t mean that we need to talk every single day. We’re there for each other when needed, but we also know when we need a break from each other. Us not talking doesn’t mean we don’t miss each other, it just means that we have lives and are busy with work, school, and friends. While not talking for a few days or weeks can suck sometimes, it makes the time when we talk that much better because the conversations last for hours.
It doesn’t matter that we don’t live around the corner from each other, I know that my long distance best friend will always be my closest friend. Because of our friendship, I know who my maid of honor will be, who will be my kids godmother, and who will never leave my side. I have never experienced such a wonderful relationship, and I know that it will last forever.
Love you, Ash.
