This summer has been nothing but work for my siblings and me. Between summer school, jobs, and sports practices, we had yet to catch much of a break. Finally, my summer classes ended. Last week, my sister finished her first semester of graduate school, and it was the official dead-week for Missouri high school sports. What better way to celebrate than one of the biggest music festivals in the country?
Last Thursday, we drove to the train station for the four hour ride to Chicago, and on Friday we went to Lollapalooza.
We saw a long list of artists throughout the day, and I wanted to share my thoughts on my favorite performances.
MisterWives
One Word Summary: Electric
Best Number: "Our Own House"
The band's opening number, listed above, got the crowd completely hyped and set the tone for the entire set. MisterWives performed like veterans rather than the up-and-coming act that they are, and I'm looking forward to watching them progress in the coming years.
Tove Lo
One Word Summary: Funky
Best Number: "My Gun"
To be honest, I only knew two songs before I went to this performance. They sounded much better live than I expected for their style of music. I was thoroughly entertained.
Father John Misty
One Word Summary: Strange
Best Number: "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings"
I had never heard of this guy before, and we only went to watch him because his writeup in the program was completely weird. Luckily, he had a great sound, interesting lyrics, and was funny when he talked to the crowd. I'm certainly now a fan.
DJ Snake
One Word Summary: LOUD
Best Number: "Get Low"
I can't accurately describe how wild and entertaining this was.
Alabama Shakes
One Word Summary: Powerful
Best Number: "Gimme All Your Love"
Brittany Howard's voice is one the will forever stick in your mind once you've heard it in person. They are a truly powerful band; they even blew the system with just a couple songs left and had to wait a bit so they could finish their performance.
Gary Clark Jr.
One Word Summary: Soulful
Best Number: "Bright Lights"
If you aren't familiar with Clark, then just imagine what would happen if Usher played guitar like a 2010 John Mayer. Gary Clark Jr. is one of the greatest guitarists of this generation, and he showcased his ability impeccably.
The Weeknd
One Word Summary: Perfect
Best Number: "The Hills"
The studio version of "The Hills" simply doesn't do the song justice. Abel Tesfaye is an incredible vocalist, which was refreshing to discover amongst the incessant auto-tuning of today's pop music. It was a great way to end the night.
My first time at Lollapalooza was a great experience. There were performances I wish I wouldn't have missed Friday, and I really wish I could have gone the second two days. Hopefully that will be an option in the future. Lollapalooza is simply amazing, and I highly recommend it to all music lovers.
