College can be a hard transition for many people and one of the hardest things to deal with for most students are roommates. There are certainly plenty of roommate horror stories on the web, but you don't hear many about people who are best friends with the person they share a tiny room with. That's why I'm here to express why living with my sister has been the biggest blessing I've ever had while in college.
We get to lean on each other's shoulders after a bad day.
I've lost count of how many times we have come back to our room and would listen to each other complain about rude professors and annoying assignments that we just had no willpower to get done. The even better part is that we'd have each other's back by saying things like, "Wow, your professor really IS a jerk," or "If you need help I can try to help you." It's so great to have someone who listens to you.
Dinner time has become an episode of "Survivor"
Every evening, we always ask each other what sounds good for dinner and we take turns choosing where to go or what to fix. This sometimes leads to a late night walk across campus together for Subway or making a mess of our microwave while attempting to cook food. It's true when they say college students have to be engineers sometimes to make things work. For example, we once shared popcorn out of a cardboard box because we were out of bowls.
We get to bond over our favorite nightly ritual
My favorite part of each day is coming back to my room, finishing all my homework and to-do lists and then for my sister and I to crawl into our beds and turn on our favorite TV show or movie and watch it together. The all time favorite, of course, is the TV show "Supernatural." We love to battle it out over who our favorites are. For the record, she is team Dean and I am team Sam.
Sharing is caring
There are some things only sisters can be good for and sharing is one of them. We love being able to borrow each other's clothes, laptop chargers, shoes, scarves, etc. We even give each other food when the other one runs out. We always say something like I'll pay you back or do a favor for you or whatever, but deep down we know we're sisters and we'll always just be doing things for one another without expecting anything in return.
It's always a party
I think one of the best things ever is the fact my little sister is my best friend. The two of us always have fun together, but things get even better when we're around other people. I don't know if there's anything I love more than inviting friends over to the dorm and having everyone hang out at one time. It normally works out well because my friends like my sister and my sister likes my friends. Everyone wins and it's one great big ball of fun!
Last but not least, we are always there for each other
It's only the first semester of the year so far, and already things have been crazy for both of us. The really good thing is that nothing happens to one of us that the other won't be there for. Whenever one of us gets sick, the other one is there to take care of them. If she needs help spelling a word, she always asks me (I am the English minor in the room), and if I need help figuring out how to do something with art, she's the first person I go to. (Her art skills are amazing.)
I think my favorite moment has been the night we both stayed up late watching horror movies and later that night, there just so happened to be a major power outage on campus. Although I'm the older, more protective one, I was convinced there was a serial killer behind the power outage and that we were probably going to die. The two of us nervously went out into the hallway to try to get information from our RA's and we were both thinking of grabbing weapons to protect the other one. Only sisters like us can bond over being two big scardy cats and laugh about it later.
So all in all, I'm really lucky. I get to live with my best friend and partner in crime everyday and we make tons of great memories along the way. Thank you, little sis, for all you do and for being who you are.
