Living The Double Life

Am I Twin A or Twin B?

Living The Double Life
Marsha Gonzalez

I've had a twin for about 19 years now, it sort of just happened actually. I'm the youngest, which means I have to wait five minutes after my sister has blown her birthday candles so everyone can sing happy birthday to me. And for those 19 years, there have been a lot of struggle, many questions and a lot of double takes down the street when people find out that they are seeing double. For those who are twins, you understand the struggles of having a twin.

The classic “do you guys have superpowers?” question.

To answer everyone’s question, yes we do. I can levitate and she has blazing laser eyes that can cut through anything. Or do we have telepathy skills? Can I read my twin’s mind? Yes, yes I can if.... I were supernatural. We are normal ordinary people, so no I cannot read her mind. Also if you pinch me, my twin will not feel it, only I will and it won’t make me a happy person.

Being compared to.

“So if you like this, does she like this too?” We are quite individual people, we may have been born on the same day but our styles and preferences are very different.

Switching classes and jobs

Have we ever switched classes, did anyone ever notice? After a while, friends and coworkers can start seeing the differences, so it gets harder to get someone to cover you. Yet we did it a few times in Elementary when it was Test Day and I was not ready to fail.

Accidentally meeting the twins friends

Walking down the halls and hearing someone call you by your twins name so you keep on walking until they get the hint that you are not going to turn around. It’s not that we didn’t hear you, we did, you just are calling the wrong person. It happens more often than you think and that’s when we meet the twin’s friends.

Still getting confused by family members over the phone

Even to this day, our family members will still find themselves confused on who picked up the phone.

“Did you just change your clothes in two minutes?”

When you pass by the same person and they think you just “changed your clothes,"and you have to explain to them that you didn’t go from a purple dress to a white t-shirt and jeans in under two minutes.

Having your own team name “ The Twins”.

Whether it’s pairing up for a soccer game or dodgeball tournament, our team name will always be The Twins. No matter what, that's what we will be known as.

Whose mean and who's nice?

Gee I don’t know, when we are born we have to decide from birth who will be the evil twin and who will be the nice twin. We are both very nice people, and sometimes we are very rebellious, like anyone, it depends on the day.

But there are plenty of upsides to having a twin that is a blessing in disguise. Minus the fighting over who gets what and who is the better twin I honestly love being a twin and It’s something that no one can ever understand unless you have someone who shares the same birthday and family as you do. I have a best friend for life since birth who gets me in ways no one else in the world could possibly do, I have my own personal travelling mirror, because if I don’t want to try something on, I’ll make her do it. She always has my back and vice versa, and we get double the extra fun on our birthdays!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
