Moving into you're own place for the first time can prove a challenge. Everything you have heard is true. Living alone is tough, demanding, a chance to grow and most importantly, one of the key steps into adulthood. Here are 5 things that need to be explained when you move out.
1. The Bills
The dreaded life of paying bills does not come easy, actually it comes faster than you expect. First comes rent, then water, trash, internet, electric, and finally cable (if Netflix is not enough). The worse part is no one reminds you about gas and groceries. Then you're left standing there telling all the bill collectors you're broke.
2. Eating
You may not realize it now, but you will not be able to just walk into the campus cafeteria and get seven plates of mediocre food. After a while you get tired of sandwiches so honestly cooking is the only way out. Here's a tip, cook big one day and eat it for the next day or two.
3. It Get's Lonely
Yes, you have a roommate(s) or you live on your own, but there is nothing like chilling on campus in the cafeteria or in a student lounge with friends.
4. Time slips away quickly
You wake up earlier to make the 10-minute drive, find a parking spot, and hike a country mile just to be on time for class. Then an entire day goes by and you finally make it home and by the time you shower and lay in bed to watch an episode or two, it 1 a.m. Then before you know it, it's time to do it all over again.
5. Confusion
Between working, paying bills, trying to hang with all of your friends you tend to question what made you leave campus life. As if you didn't already question your degree, now you ponder life. Some days you end up like Patrick.
6. Underprepared
I can tell you from personal experience, you never have everything you need for your first apartment. No one tells you to get Tupperware for leftovers, or that salt and pepper are not sufficient for every meal, or even that you need more cleaning supplies like a VACUUM (yes we forgot about that).
No one will truly give you everything you need to know about living off campus and moving away from mom and dad the first time. There are a lot of bills that you didn't know about, and things you didn't realize would be use full for an apartment. Well I'm here to let you know living on your own for the first takes a lot out of you.
