I have always been a very social person. I like to be around people and communicate, but recently I made the brave decision to live on my own. In college, many people live in dorms with others, or in apartments with close friends, but there are those of us who would rather live independently.
I made the decision to not pursue with a roommate because I think that I do better living on my own. It isn't because I don't like being around others, but some people like myself are more comfortable on our own. I think that the reason I do well on my own might have to do with the fact that I am an only child. I grew up without siblings and I never had to live with anyone else my age. It's not to say that I am unable to function living with others, but right now I think it suits me best. I truly enjoy being independent.
There are of course perks to living alone and disadvantages. When you live alone you get to call the shots for your apartment. It is yours and you can be as messy or clean as you want to be. You don't have to worry about anything except yourself which is nice. The downside is if you run out of activities and things to do, it can get a little lonely. I do get bored easily so I am going to have to learn how to keep myself preoccupied.
However, there are some tips for living alone. It's important to not always stay in your apartment. You must be social or you'll go crazy. Also, make sure you're comfortable in your living space. I had my mom come up and help me decorate my studio, and now it feels like home.
When I made the decision to move, it was stressful. I handled most of the process on my own because my parents don't live in Chicago with me. I am actually thankful for the experience because it helped me grow. I was forced to figure things out on my own and now I feel that it helped me 'adult.'
All in all, living alone is a personal choice. It doesn't work for some for multiple reasons, but for those of us willing to try it, I can personally say it's worth it.
