10 Things Every ASU Freshman Living At Taylor Place Knows Too, Too Well

In This Article:

Why come to the ASU Downtown Phoenix Campus? It's hot as hell, there's only one pool, and there's a U of A building next door (gross). But at least there are shuttles that are mostly on time to take us to the other campuses.

Most Sun Devils, and by most I mean freshman and sophomores, live in the dorms at Taylor Place. And like any dorm building, Taylor Place has its quirks.

1. Waiting a thousand years for one of the four elevators to get back to your room.

I just want to get back to my room and put my bag down, is that too much to ask?

2. Trying to control your frustration when you have to wait for the elevators to get you to the ground floor.

I have to be in class in five minutes. I do not have time to stop on every single floor and watch this elevator become a can of sardines. Guess I'm taking the stairs.

3. The. Stairs.

What do you mean you can only take the stairs down to the ground floor? Why can't we use the stairs to come back up too?

4. Realizing the dining hall closed at 7:00 p.m. because it's Friday but you came down for dinner at 7:15 p.m.

Nothing is more depressing than seeing those steel bars covering those Sun Devil menus.

5. Feeling that single tear roll down your cheek when the washing machine is being used in Tower 1 AND in Tower 2.

This is an emergency! I'm out of underwear! It's not like I can go to another floor to...oh wait.

6. Dealing with the incredibly thin walls.

I mean, there are worse things than hearing your neighbor sing in the shower.

7. Having to use you Sun Devil Card to get into literally anywhere in Taylor Place.

Oh man, I left my keys are in my bag, one sec. OK, here, I got them, but now people are waiting for me to open the door. This is so awkward.

8. Forgetting to check your mailbox because the Housing Office only emails you about packages.

I'm sorry mom! I had no idea you sent me a card.

9. Hanging out on the floors that have the televisions.

Why work on homework when you can watch a weird show you've never seen before with someone you've never met?

10. Realizing that even though the stair thing is annoying, Taylor Place is still pretty nice.

This building is pretty safe, especially since no one can get up those stupid stairs.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
