Healthy living is becoming a positive trend that many people are beginning to follow as social media has brought out information opposing unhealthy lifestyles and their detrimental effects. This being said, is it even possible to live an active, healthy lifestyle at college without breaking the bank or letting grades drop?
Becoming a healthier version of yourself doesn't necessarily mean you have a strict set of instructions on, "how to be healthy", as every person is different. A holistic approach to your health is ideal, for example, if you exercise frequently and eat plenty of vegetables, but don't drink enough water, then what is "healthy" for you may be "unhealthy" to someone else. Not everyone has to buy a wheatgrass kale smoothie every morning or run 20 miles on your college campus to stay healthy. Sometimes, being healthy means taking that 15-minute break during a long study session, or waking up a little earlier than usual and stretching before a long day of classes.
Regarding food specifically, I have learned that while it may take a little extra time to look out for what you're eating, that it makes a world of difference! After freshman year, I quit sugar in its entirety. Before that, I would eat cookies, ice cream, and brownies at dinner. Then in my room, I would munch on KitKats and Doritos. I quickly found myself gaining weight, and becoming less energetic. This was when I knew I had to change something before I fell into a deep trap. I also totally cut out red meat, and try to always opt for vegetarian options or anything with less salt, fat, and chemicals.
Sometimes being active by doing a small 10-minute workout in your room can be life-changing. If you think about it, we sit in chairs and desks all day long for university, and when we get home, what do people want to do? Sit down and relax of course! Sitting is by far the absolute worst thing for your health, it takes a toll on your heart and body. A small walk here and there makes a world of difference, as it's easy to both mentally and physically degrade if all you do is sit in one place.
There are always things to do to become a healthier version of yourself, even if you're on a college budget. With final exam week quickly approaching (and summer!), small changes every day will accumulate over time and help you take control back of your life.
