Live In The Moment

You don't want to miss something.

Live In The Moment
Susan Rowlen

As important as it is to plan for the future, it is also important to live in the moment. This can mean a variety of things; it could mean to not look so far into the future and try to plan things that you have no control over yet and enjoy what's happening in your life at that time, or it can literally mean to be in that exact moment, taking it in.

I know the future can be scary, and a lot of us want to be ready for it, but the truth is, it's what you're doing now that will prepare you most for your future. I think it's pretty pointless to just look ahead and worry/plan what's going to happen, when you should be focusing on what you can do now that will help you for a few years down the road. This could be saving money, getting an education, or anything else along those lines.

Another thing to realize about living in the moment that is important, is that you need to take in your current surroundings. I think we're all guilty of being on our phones at dinner, or at social events, or pretty much any time of the day, but I think it's important to put the phone down, and really engage in the now. The now is when you make memories that you can look back on forever, and it's hard to make memories when you are just constantly on your phone all the time. Of course if you're taking pictures or making permanent memories in some way or another on your phone, that's okay, but seriously we should all try to be a little more attentive and realize the times when it's okay to be on our phones, and when we should be engaging in conversation.

I know that I would much rather be focused on what's going on in my life now, than worrying about what's going to happen 5 years from now, because it's much more relaxing to live in the moment than to try and look into the future where nothing is certain. So next time you catch yourself caught up in the future and not in the moment, take a step back, put down the phone, and live in the now.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
