Now that the New Year is upon us, I know I cannot be the only one scrambling for a New Year's resolution still. A resolution made in the first month still counts right? Regardless, one of my “sorta” resolutions for the year, is to just be a more simple person. What exactly does that entail? Well, read on for some tips on how to become a simple, minimalistic person and maybe find your own New Years resolution for 2016 as well.
1. Allow the little things to mean more.
In life too much emphasis is placed on the big and the grander things that happen every once in awhile, compared to the little things that essentially occur every day. If we all just took a few moments to appreciate the little things that occur during the day we may all be happier human beings. Every day that you wake up should not be taken for granted, look forward to making your morning coffee and appreciate the moment where it is the perfect temperature of hot and cold. Take a walk outside and yes, while cold, appreciate the way the sun warms you despite the cold wind. At the end of the day, appreciate the warm bed that you sleep in underneath your favorite comforter. The little things.
2. Eat Simply.
The eat simply phenomenon has taken the world by storm lately, with new trends in purchasing from Whole Foods as well as the organic movement. While yes, I do enjoy laughing at my mom for constantly harping on the benefits of going organic, she does have a point. Eat simple foods, eat healthy foods, drink tons of water. I swear it does actually help you feel better and it lifts your mood x10.
Now, if you couple the idea of eating simply and healthy with exercise then you have the perfect combination. Exercise could be anything, take the stairs, attend yoga, ride your bike, go for a walk with your significant other. Anything that gets you out the door and using your body will be beneficial in the upcoming year.
3. Appreciate your well-earned free time.
I will admit that I am the biggest procrastinator. I will put things off until the last minute and refuse to work past 10 p.m. If I am not busy than I am most likely lying in bed reading some article on Twitter. Instead of procrastinating during the day, spend your time wisely and then relax at night. This past semester I took on way more than I could handle and it visibly showed.
So, for this upcoming semester, I decided to take fewer classes, use my internship for class credit, and take a class that I am actually interested in instead of pertaining to my majors. In doing this, I will have extra free time, which I hope to use wisely by spending more time working as well as furthering my future goals by writing and reading. The goal is to write at least once a day, as well as read at least once a day. Keeping my brain active is important and keeping myself active instead of laying in bed all the time will lead to a happier and healthier life overall.
Overall, while simple resolutions, they require a conscious effort that will, in the long run, have a positive effect on anyone’s life. Hopefully, if you do not have a resolution yet, you were able to take one from here!
