Always launched its #LikeAGirl campaign on June 26, 2014. One year after this launch, a new video for the campaign has been released. This empowering video is encouraging girls and women around the globe to be confident and rise above the barriers faced by the female gender. As a woman with hopes of pursuing a career in a male dominant field, this video gave me goosebumps.
In the video, girls are asked if they have ever felt limited because of their gender. Every girl in this video answers that question with YES. According to the 2015 Always survey among U.S. Women, 72 percent of females in our country feel limited by society. This video was meant to make a difference in the way that female roles in society are viewed. Each girl in the video is given a box to represent the things they feel limited by. The girls in the video draw their limitations on the box. Limitations written ranged from not being strong enough to not being brave enough. Always stated in the video that "a girl's confidence plummets during puberty, making her more likely to accept limitations." The girls then destroy their limitations by kicking the boxes that represent them. The goal of this video is to make every girl feel unstoppable and make her feel like she has no limits. The #LikeAGirl movement has introduced a new hashtag, #UNSTOPPABLE, to show that nothing can stop a girl from achieving her dreams.

Women are responding to the #LikeAGirl movement on social media in such positive ways! Women have been constantly rising up in our society and taking action to show just how powerful females are. For example, the U.S. Women's Soccer team proved what it really means to "play like a girl" when they won the gold. This team of women proved to girls everywhere that if you work hard enough to achieve a goal, great success will follow.
Gender roles are something that I have always frowned upon (by gender roles, I mean the "natural roles" that should be taken on by men and women). "Naturally," women should care for the children and the home, whereas men should work and be the sole provider and overseer for the family. I completely disagree with this! Some women, like myself, feel more comfortable working than cooking and caring for the home. Many of my female friends, myself included, have dreams to pursue careers in science, medicine and agriculture. Some of these careers are even in male dominant fields where women are told they aren't strong enough, smart enough, or good enough for the job. The reason this video is so empowering to me is because it encourages women to chase after their life goals, even if they aren't typical goals for a girl. I want all women to feel confident in their lives, not confined by gender roles. The Always #LikeAGirl campaign could be key to growing bolder, more confident women who aren't afraid to step outside of their comfort zones.
Here are a few encouraging quotes that inspire me to be a strong, independent woman. I hope they inspire you too!
