I live in a fairyland. I daydream of unicorns, talking trees and flying turtles. I imagine fairies hiding in the bushes or goblins dodging traffic. It's just how I am. I have often wondered if I was less intelligent by having such a wild imagination, or if it was foolish to tell others about it. But in time, I just learned to accept my mind for what it is, and not try to pretend otherwise.
Having a creative mind can be awesome, but sometimes difficult to subdue. What does a creative mind look like in a very serious, no-nonsense, day-to-day life? Well, since I can vouch as one of those "head in the clouds" people, I will tell you. Here is my perspective on the pros and cons of having such a mind.
One amazing advantage to having a wandering imagination is that you can't be limited to how you think. Where most people see a broom, you see a guitar, a wizard's staff or a sword. You cannot be squished into reality's grasp. Another advantage is your ability to tell some pretty cool stories. Your friends might brag about your storytelling, making you the perfect candidate for campfire tales. We can't forget, of course, the overall appreciation a creative mind has when viewing the world around them. Every detail, color and scent awaken the imagination.
However, as a resident of fairyland, I have come across some negative effects of my imagination. For one thing, I am hopeless at any task involving the memorization of numbers, patterns or equations. This includes following traffic directions and taking a math class. It is also worth mentioning that what others would consider normal, you find boring. Your fingers itch to paint that plain, white wall, or cover that blank piece of paper with doodles. But the biggest problem with having a creative mind is that you feel slightly disconnected from reality. You feel like going on an ocean voyage or a medieval quest, rather than doing your taxes and washing your car. You can spend an hour dreaming of a make-believe land, but only five minutes focusing on a news program. This disconnection makes it hard sometimes for people to have normal conversations with you.
Despite how different it is to have an overly imaginative mind, these individuals are no less important in contributing to society. The world needs creative people. If you are one of these individuals, please know that there is nothing wrong with the way you think. It is simply a unique way of thinking. We need more people who can dream of flying vegetables or alien barbershops. Be proud of your imagination.
