I'm struggling with how to begin this article. It seems so foolish; to lack eloquence on such a simple topic.
Spread kindness and love: this isn't a complicated message. Yet somehow, an unparalleled amount of hate seems to flood our world each and every day.
When was the last time you performed an act of true goodness for a stranger, expecting nothing in return? The answer might scare you.
I have learned over the years that sometimes the smallest actions can produce the greatest reactions. Gestures and comments can be sporadic and brief, but the residual impact can last a lifetime.
I want this message to be short and concise. I am not sure how to implore or entice you to do more small nice things for people, other than it can make someone else's day. That should be enough, shouldn't it?
I've made a list (because it wouldn't be an Odyssey article without one) of things - some free, others inexpensive - that you can do in an effort to make a person smile. There is nothing more rewarding then seeing someone infectiously beam ear to ear, just because of something you did or said.
I am not implying that I am an expert at doing little things to gain big smiles. I am not. In fact, I am trying to start a conversation and hopefully compile a larger list of ways I and others can make the world a better place, one small act at a time.
I have digressed into a series of clichés, but I hope my words have motivated you, and in turn, you can give a little, and get a smile.
Small Gifts to Give:
1. Compliment a fellow student for making an interesting or articulate comment in class. - Let someone know their opinion is heard or well received.
2. Write inspiring quotes down on a piece of paper, then hand them out to people or leave them around the student center. - You might think this is incredibly ridiculous, but I love motivational or uplifting quotes.
3. Buy the coffee for the person behind you in line. - They might protest, but they'll eventually concede. This is really fun to do in drive-throughs...then you're just a mystery gifter!
4. Speaking of coffee...actually ask the person behind the counter how THEIR day is going. - Be invested in that question when you ask it.
5. Offer to help carry____. - Whether you see someone struggling with their books or their groceries, offering your assistance is actually widely appreciated.
6. Give a meal to a homeless person. - In the long run, food and drink will do more good than spare change.
7. Tell a police officer/construction worker/sanitation worker that you appreciate all that they do. - Whether you realize it or not, they are helping you get an education. Imagine school without people protecting you, buildings to work in, or clean environments to live in.
8. Give someone a smile. It's the easiest gift. - You'll often be given one back.
