WhyToRead

Maybe you’ve heard of them, maybe you haven’t. Regardless, there are millions of books on the market and I can promise you that you haven’t heard of over half of them. Here are a few books that sadly slipped through the cracks, but are really great reads.

1. "Switcher" by Diane Mayer Christiansen

This book follows the story of 13-year-old Samantha Schmealy. She’s always lived in her quiet town. Her life is quite normal — that is, until her parents discover her unusual gift of being able to switch into a black cat. Suddenly, she’s whisked off to St. Levitius for “readjustment.” Follow Samantha and her new friends as they discover the secrets of this establishment and learn that being different is okay.

2. "Dreamland" by Sarah Dessen

Since Caitlin started dating Rogerson Biscoe, she’s been in a sort of semiconscious state where nothing is quite real. He’s magnetic, charming and dangerous. But he makes Caitlin forget about everything: her mundane life, her withdrawn mother, and her missing sister. But what happens when being with Rogerson is a bigger dilemma than being without him?

3. "One Amazing Thing" by Chitra Divakaruni

One late night in a passport and visa office, nine strangers get trapped together when an earthquake rips through the building. With little food, no way to escape and a slowly-flooding space, these strangers are stuck with each other. With everyone under exceedingly high stress, the graduate student suggests they all share a personal tale — one amazing thing — which they have never told anyone else.

4. "The House of the Scorpion" by Nancy Farmer

Matteo Alacrán’s DNA came from El Patrón, the lord of a country called Opium, a strip of land that was once Mexico. Matteo was not born — rather, he was harvested as a clone. Most people consider him a monster. Most people, that is, except El Patrón. He loves Matteo. As Matteo grapples to understand his existence, he has to maneuver El Patron’s power-hungry family. Escape might be the only way out.

5. "The Weight of Silence" by Heather Gudenkauf

Calli Clark is a sweet girl who suffers from selective mutism that was brought on by a tragedy as a toddler. Petra Gregory is Calli’s best friend, and her voice. But what happens when one morning both girls are found missing from their beds?

6. "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern

There was no announcement. It was just there. It’s called Le Cirque de Rêves, and it’s only open at night. But behind the black and white stripped curtains, a great competition is afoot: a duel between two magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since they were children. But what happens when these two stumble head-over-heels in love?

7. "Before I Fall" by Lauren Oliver

Samantha Kingston has it all: the most gorgeous boyfriend, the best friends, and the first pick of everything in her high school. February 12 is just another day to her, except that it’s her last. But she gets another chance to relive her last day. Seven chances actually. How far will she go to save her own life?

8. "The Westing Game" by Ellen Raskin

A strange series of events begin when 16 strangers gather for the reading of Samuel W. Westing’s will. Although no one knows why he’s chosen a stranger and perhaps a murderer to inherit his fortune, this will not stop him from playing one last game.

9. "I Heart You, You Haunt Me" by Lisa Schroeder

Ava loses her boyfriend Jackson, the one that she thought she’d spend her life with. But when she starts dreaming about him and hearing his voice in her head, she knows he’s back from the dead.

10. "The Queens Fool" by Philippa Gregory

She has the gift of “sight.” Hannah is soon thrown in the complicated word of the Tutor court. She is brought to court as Queen Mary, and ultimately Queen Elizabeth’s, holy fool. Hired as a fool but used as a spy, Hannah must decide between the safe life as a commoner or the intrigue of the court.

11. "A Room With A View" by E.M. Forster

12. "The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel" by Michael Scott

This is a series of six books that follows Sophie and Josh Newman, a brother and sister duo, who help Nicholas Flamel, a 700-year-old man who has been making the elixir of life for centuries. Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
