At the hands of mankind come two things: wickedness and utter annihilation. Since the fall of man, these patterns which have run rampant and plagued humanity are deemed untreatable. Acts of cowardice and self-preservation are accepted as true characteristics of our nature, and of who we essentially are as human beings. History repeats itself on loop, while we stand idly by crying out for change to take place.
But every second in time is temporary; all things in this life are temporary. Money fades, beauty withers, and nature is constantly adapting and always evolving. It is wild and unpredictable; defying odds just to merely survive in this world. With the passing of tides, life shifts through different seasons. We never live the same moment twice. So why then, do we as human beings choose to stay static through it all? We may slightly transform on the outside, but only by the decay of our flesh. When on the inside, we are confined by our thoughts and fears. And even though we have done bad things and made mistakes, our life narratives still portray ourselves as the “hero” or “victim” of the story. We choose to accept the faults in our humanity and let those faults define us. Individualistically programmed to anoint ourselves, we see our weaknesses as characteristics and products of human nature. We fail to recognize who we can be because we brush off the possibility that we can change. We use what we believe to be our fallen and broken nature as scapegoats against the unknown.
Humanity is complex. But if an unyielding winter can transform into a blooming spring, then what or who is to say we can’t radically change as well? If nature can adapt, we can adapt. It takes more than sheer force of will to take the leap. It requires courage to face the trials and falls that come with the uncertain, but also it takes fear to wake you up.
However, it is not an impossible or insurmountable feat.
We are not limited by our human nature. Personality traits, ethnicity, race, religion, circumstances and DNA do not define who you are or your future. You do not have to accept your brokenness as just “who you are” in order to be happy. You do not have to allow fear from your nightmares to control your actions. You do no have to assume that weakness is permanent or part of your genetic code. You can change; humankind can change. It is never too late to be the person you want to be.
Humanity is good, or at least we can be good. We just have to take the leap and bravely face the unknown. I am not done changing. And in all honesty, I hope I never am. I have regrets and failures like everyone else that I would be happy to forget, but I do not want to live my life hiding behind definitions of myself that have been given to me by my past actions or blood tests. It may be a journey without a destination, but it is not worthless.
