There are three horizontal lines at the top right corner of your Instagram profile. If you click on it you will see another button titled: Your Activity. In a summary, it's a way to check your average time spent on Instagram for the week.
I discovered this a month ago. When I first checked it, my time was over three hours. I was spending three hours a day scrolling through Instagram and focusing on other people's lives.
Instagram gives you an option of monitoring your time and sending reminders when you've hit a certain limit for the day.
I set mine to 30 minutes and my average use this week is an hour and 45 minutes. Yes, it's still a large amount of time dedicated to Instagram but It's almost two hours less than it was a month ago.
In the past, I have tried (like many other's) to simply delete the app. It worked with Facebook and It worked with Twitter, so why wouldn't it work with Instagram?
Well, that lasted less than a week and I convinced myself to have one but only follow family. Slowly I began adding old friends and I was back at square one. This time though was different because I wasn't avoiding anything. I was still using the media but in moderation.
In the time I spent away from Instagram, I found myself more at peace. Though I have been using more of Tumblr and other social media sites, I wasn't worried about posting or who posted or even what they posted. The anxiety that came with Instagram left almost completely.
Instagram was, in a way, like a news outlet. There I only saw what was going on and who was doing what. On Tumblr, I found creators and new and engaging content and series.
I became inspired instead of discouraged. I saw more art and content but instead of comparing myself, I saw visions of art I can create and stories I wanted to also share.
I encourage others to track how much time you waste on pointless scrolling and find sites that both feed your creativity and mind.
