Media rarely, if ever, shows the positive aspects of Greek life. But these Lil Wayne lyrics describe sororities better than the average news story, which generally portrays us as sexually promiscuous alcoholics. Obviously, this is a false portrayal.
To start, we are, “So misunderstood but what’s the world without enigma.” Contrary to popular belief, a main purpose of sorority life is to hold each member accountable for her actions, which Lil Wayne explains through: “What goes around comes around like a hula hoop.” Every sorority has rules that must be followed to remain a member if someone breaks a rule she goes to Honor Board or Standards because we want every member to fulfill her highest potential.
As Lil Wayne wisely says, “Karma is a bitch? Well just make sure that bitch is beautiful,” explaining why we try our best to volunteer in the community and participate in school-wide activities. We think like him in that, “I don’t feel I’ve done enough so I’mma keep on doin' this,” as we work to raise more and more money for our philanthropies every year.
Usually, sorority girls are illustrated as cookie-cutter molds, but if you or Lil Wayne ever asked us, “Do you ever get nervous,” the answer would hands down be, “Hell yeah, Hell yeah, Hell yeah,” because as the famous rapper says, “I rock to the beat of my drum set,” and we are all individuals with many different personalities and interests.
His line, “They say 'choose wisely' that’s why I was chosen,” clearly references recruitment, an equally anxiety-producing and rewarding experience for all girls involved.
We do admit to our flaws, explained through, “Promises I hope I never break them,” which most often relates to signing up for a philanthropy event that we don’t actually have time to attend. But our lack of time is likely due both to living, “Life on the edge I’m dangling my feet,” and all of the time we spend studying to have a higher overall GPA than the non-Greek community.
Although, “Haters can’t see me: nose-bleed seats,” I understand Greek life isn’t for everybody, and you don’t have to join a sorority or fraternity, but please don’t perpetuate the rumor that we only ever “drop it shawty drop it like it’s hot,” because love us or hate us we are here to stay.
"People say I'm borderline crazy sorta kinda," but don't judge before you've seen what we are all about. Come to our philanthropy events and see the positive impact we have on the campus and surrounding community because we are so much more than the stereotypical frat party down the street and the letters we wear. In closing, “I speak the truth but I guess that’s a foreign language to y’all.”
