"I brought you into this world, and I can take you right out of it."
As daughters, we have all heard our mothers say this at least a time or two. It was probably met with an overly dramatic eye roll, a heavy sigh, mumbling or a glare that could potentially create a mother-daughter stand off. Growing up, I always said I didn't act like my mom, but as I've gotten older, I catch myself being just like her. I hope to carry with me the attributes and mannerisms of my mother, as she is a light in the darkness of this world. My mom has given numerous pieces of advice that I take to heart, but these are the ones I find most important:
1. "Always strive to make someone else's day better."
Before school every morning, my mom would say this to me. In a world that is centered around self-love and selfishness, she wanted to instill in me that this world is not about my desires. It is about serving others and respecting everyone.
2. "Do not make anyone feel small."
This is not referring to physical stature by any means. I was taught that each person is different, and each person has an opinion. My mom taught me to respect everyone and to not belittle anyone due to a perspective other than your own.
3. "Less is more."
This statement can pertain to just about anything: makeup, perfume, accessories, sweets, and even that bright purple eyeshadow you found so pretty just before puberty hit.
4. "Kill 'em with Kindness."
This is just something everyone should live by. Not only will it prevent drama for your mama, but it will also make your life so much easier in the long run.
5. "Jesus. Others. Yourself."
Not only is this an acronym for the word joy, but it is truly the order of importance in my life. She has taught me that my faith is the most important aspect of my life, followed by serving others and lastly, myself. This is not saying that "me time" is not important. It is saying that if Jesus and serving others are the center of your life, then your personal goals, dreams, and aspirations can be fulfilled on a much higher level.
While these are the top five life lessons I can remember from my mom, these are definitely not all of them. She exhibits grace and beauty in her everyday life. I hope the world continues to be blessed by my mom - I know I have.
