Let me preface by saying I am not a poet nor a renowned scholar. In fact, I am merely a young adult learning that there truly is great literary genius all around us. If you have ever truly lived and seen the movie Forrest Gump, then you have already heard the astounding words, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what your gonna get." Of course, as a six year old, there was nothing really poetic about that statement at all, and it honestly seemed more silly than anything else. Well, as an esteemed adult (sort of), I get it! Life is indeed just like a box of chocolates and truly, you never know what you are going to get.
Life is messy and can be really sticky at times, but people appear to have it all together on the outside. The outside chocolate layer holds in all the chaos and mess that gets everywhere, but just like in life, those are often than the best parts. The defining moments in a person's life happen when life gets messy and they learn to manage the chaos and smile through it. You either grow in those moments or you remain stuck in the gooey caramel center and never get to experience the rest.
Life comes completely stocked full with choices which may all look good, but there are some very bad decisions. There is nothing more mood killing than thinking you areabout to indulge in a mouthful of caramel goodness, only to discover that it is nothing more than a chocolate filled with raspberry: Bad Choice. There is never a point in your life where you are not obligated to make choices, so choose wisely and for the sake of the good moments, do not taste the bad moments and dull yourself to the wonderful times.
We do not choose to be given Life, but rather we are given the box of chocolates and it is up to us to do something with it. There is nothing worse than getting a box of chocolates and letting them go to waste because you were too scared of the option you were given. It is up to you to maximize your circumstances and make every moment in your life mean something. No one can change the life you were given, only you have the power to indulge in the sweetness.
Life is not always fair. We may not always get the prettiest box of chocolates or the best opportunities, but we cannot all be a Lindor Truffle Box. Some must be Hershey's, Dollar Candy and all of the less refined chocolate. Make the most of what you have been given, because it only belongs to you.
You do not need to be Socraties to figure out that what I am saying is true. Just realize that life comes with variety, choices and acceptance. Step back and look at your box of chocolates and enjoy. You have the whole box ahead of you!
