Life Lessons As Told By Disney

Turns out I learned all I know from some fictional characters.

While I think Mom and Dad have taught me an abundance of lessons about how the handle the toughest parts of life, for some reason I feel like I can really trust Mulan and Pocahontas when it comes to doing the right thing. This might just be me, but these guys and pretty much every other Disney character gave me advice I find myself still following to this day. Here's just some of their wise words.

1. "A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference." -Eeyore, Winnie the Pooh

If there is one thing I have learned, it is that treating others with respect and kindness will make both you and them always feel better.

2. "The only thing predictable about life is its unpredictability." -Remy, Ratatouille

Hardly anything is ever going to work out as you think it will. Take this in stride and it will make you a stronger person.

3. "Remember, you're the one who can fill the world with sunshine." -Snow White, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

You have all the potential to make the world great with your kindness, generosity, and good attitude. Use all these wonderful qualities to your advantage.

4. “Some people are worth melting for.” –Olaf, Frozen

There are some people you will be willing to make endless sacrifices for. If you really love them, these sacrifices will never seem like a burden.

5. “I am on my way. I can go the distance! I don’t care how far. Somehow I’ll be strong I know. Every mile will be worth my while. I would go most anywhere to find where I belong.” –Hercules, Hercules

If you have the mindset that you can succeed, you are halfway to achieving anything you could possibly desire.

6. "Do not be followed by its commonplace appearance. Like so many things, it is not what is outside, but what is inside that counts." --Merchant, Aladdin

You could be the prettiest girl in school, but if you don't have the personality to go along with it, you won't be respected. Kindness and gratitude are prettier than any lipstick.

7. "You think the only people who are people, are the people who look and think like you. But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you'll learn things you never knew you never knew." --Pocahontas, Pocahontas

Sometimes it can be hard to think from other perspectives and automatically think your opinions are always right. It can be very rewarding to listen to others and try to understand where they're coming from.

8. "Just because it's what's done, doesn't mean it's what should be done." --Cinderella, Cinderella

You have the power to change something if you don't think it's right. Just because it's always been done that way or it's considered the norm doesn't mean it has to stay that way.

9. "The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all." --The Emperor, Mulan

In order to get stronger, you must go through difficult times and struggles that may make you want to give up.

10. "I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it." --Alice, Alice in Wonderland

You may have very good ideas about what to do with your life, but if they're all just ideas, no progress will ever be made.

11. "Fairy tales can come true. You gotta make them happen, it all depends on you." --Tiana, The Princess and the Frog

We must be self-sufficient. It is our responsibility to make our dreams and wishes true, no one else's.

12. "Always let your conscience be your guide." --The Blue Fairy, Pinocchio

Listen to what your mind is telling you. If you feel like something isn't right, don't do it.

13. "When life gets you down do you wanna know what you've gotta do? Just keep swimming!" --Dory, Finding Nemo

You can't just stop and shut down when things get hard! You have to keep working, and eventually you will find a way to survive.

14. "Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it." --Rafiki, The Lion King

All of us will go through things that will make us feel dejected. But it's so important to let these moments be a learning experience rather than something that gives you nightmares.

15. "The very things that hold you down are going to lift you up." --Timothy Mouse, Dumbo

Sometimes the hardest things teach you the most important lessons. If you can get over the challenge, you'll enter another stage of life: a better one.

16. "Your identity is your most valuable possession. Protect it." --Elastigirl, The Incredibles

All the qualities that make you a unique person are what people love you for. Don't change for anyone.

17. "Venture outside your comfort zone. The rewards are worth it." --Rapunzel, Tangled

Nothing better will come if you're standing still. Think of all the things you could experience if you took a few risks!

18. "Today is a good day to try." --Quasimodo, The Hunchback of Norte Dame

If you don't do it today, do you think you ever really will?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
