Sometimes life doesn’t go the way we expect it to. We wake up each morning with certain expectations and plans for the day, but more often than not, these plans change.
Whether it’s little things, like eating breakfast at 8:30 a.m. instead of 8 a.m., or big things, like getting in a fight with your best friend, there’s no way of knowing what any given day will hold. Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and we have to deal with it. Everyone handles a change in the plans differently, but the most important part of any situation is how we react when things don’t go the way we thought. Sometimes this is a good thing -- say, if you were expecting bad weather, and the day ended up being beautiful. Sometimes it isn’t such a good thing: You procrastinated on a paper and had to miss out because you were finishing it.
We do all in our power to remain in control, but when things are out of our hands, all that matters is how we deal with the inconveniences and problems.
Sometimes the best thing to do is accept whatever comes our way. Accepting life for what it is is one of the most important things we can do. Rather than getting stressed out or overly dramatic, it’s more peaceful to stay calm and think about what your situation really is. A lot of times, you can have an immediate emotional reaction to something, or someone, that makes a situation seem like a much bigger deal than it actually is. Once you’ve had time to relax and think about things with a clear mind, nothing is ever as bad as it seems.
There are a lot of clichéd sayings that I find particularly useful when I’m unsure about life. I usually think of certain adages as tacky and overused, but they’re popular for a reason, and they’re usually pretty helpful. A few of my favorites are:
“What’s for you will not pass you.”
“It is what it is.”
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
There’s something special about going with the flow. When you give up your desire for control and just let things be, you’ll be surprised about what opportunities will present themselves.
