Life is like a big interview. Especially in college. In college you have an array of group interviews, individual interviews, interviews here, interviews there. And they all seem to converge on the same week.
Just recently I’ve had five interviews within the span of 11 days. And it’s exhilarating because people are like “oh, how was your interview?” “Good luck on your interview!” or they’re like “You’re really interviewing for everything!” But it can also be stressful and a time to really psych yourself out.
Here’s the interview break down.
- Want to do something on campus? There will probably be an application. Or an interview. Or both. *Ugh paperwork*
- If you have a friend or friends that are currently or were involved with the organization, you seek their advice. I did this especially the second time I interviewed for an organization I didn’t get into the first time I applied.
- You start with the group interview. This is a great time to meet the people in your group and make friends that way. Or you might have people you already know in your group. I met and connected with a lot of great people during Summer Orientation Staff (SOS) and Connecting Alumni To Students (CATS) group interviews.
- Next round? Depending on how the organization sets up their interview process, you may make it to the individual interview or not. When it’s something like “you may make it to the next round, or nah,” the interview process instantly becomes more intense. *Let the panic commence*
- The dreaded waiting period between interviews is scary. Good Lord, all the anxiety bubbles up and you start doubting yourself. I found that sometimes it’s nice to reach out to friends to get some reassurances.
- The anxiety sets in a little bit before the interview so it sets you on edge. “Oh man what if I do this…or that…or what if this happens…?”
- The individual interview rolls around and it’s all you. You be you. Be yourself.
- You’re not done yet! There’s another dreaded waiting period -- for the actual result.
- The reveal. Now, this can go two ways: “Hooray, celebration!”
- Or “Awww, maybe next year?” I’ve had experience with both. The first time I got a rejection I was really broken up about it, but then I realized that wasn’t what I was meant to do over the summer. This year, when the applications came out, I applied again.
- So sometimes if you don’t get in the first time you have to try again.
Then when the interviews wrap up, you finally get some time to rest.
But it’ll start all over again. And it just gets more intense, because there’s the interviews in college and then there’s the interviews for real world jobs.
So life is series of continual interviews…and you never know what you’re going to get.
