If you're an English major, chances are that at some point, someone has told you you were crazy. English is one of the least popular choices for an undergrad, and we'd be lying if we said we didn't understand why. While your friends are studying to be doctors or lawyers, you're writing a paper about feminism in Shakespeare (and enjoying it). Here's a list of things all English majors will relate to, as told by one of the most relateable shows on the planet:
1. When you tell people your major and they say "Ugh, I hate English"
Well that's....nice. But, why?
2. Or when they start telling you how there's nothing you can do with your degree
You're not telling us anything we haven't already heard. Also, it's not entirely true.
3. But they always ask if you'll edit their papers
I'd love to, as soon as I'm done with this fifteen-page research paper.
4. Seeing grammar or spelling mistakes in published writing
How could this happen??
5. Sometimes you feel like all you do is read and write...and read...and write
It may not sound like much when you say it out loud, but it's really a vicious cycle of books and papers.
6. But doing work for non-English classes is almost always a drag
There's nothing like a math class to make you confident in your choice of major.
7. When Microsoft Word dares to correct your grammar
Nice try, Microsoft, but this phrasing was definitely intentional.
8. When you get any harsh criticism on your writing
It's no big deal. It's just my life's goal at stake. It's fine.
9. Having a never-ending list of things you want/have to read
So many books, so little time.
10. When someone actually gets your literary references and jokes
It's like finding the Samwise Gamgee to your Frodo Baggins.
11. Having an irrational love of cool words
And you probably sound pretentious trying to use them, but oh, well.
12. And knowing you're a major nerd, but trying to convince people otherwise
Aside from the occasional geek-outs about things most people don't care about, you know you're super fun to be around.
At the end of the day, we know we didn't pick the "cool" major, and our heads are filled with information many would consider "useless." But, we get to sit around all day reading and discussing books, so who's the real winner?
