7 Lies Your High School Teachers Told You About College

The power points are actually online.

High school was always full of rules. We were given little to no freedoms. High school teachers fill their students' heads with false claims. These false claims are about college, and these claims are making students scared and nervous for college. In reality, most of the claims that high school teachers make about college are completely backward. Here are a few examples of these backward claims:

1. Professors don't take attendance.

I have never had a single professor that doesn't take attendance. Attendance actually counts for a grade in college.

2. Professors don't care about you.

My college professors care more about me than any high school teacher ever has. My professors will answer my emails at 2 am. They always take the time out to ask how I am and answer any questions I may have.

3. You have to be really good at taking notes.

False again. All of my professors post their power points online, so you don't actually have to be a very good note-taker.

4. Homework won't be turned in for a grade.

I had a teacher in high school once tell me that homework in college would only be assigned for personal gain. He said professors would not grade your homework. This was something I had looked forward to, but I was let down once I got to college. Professors do, in fact, grade your homework.

5. You will for sure change your major.

While this is true for many college students, it isn't something that will 100% happen. I'm a Junior, and I have not changed my major, nor do I plan to.

6. If you miss one class, you will fail.

Like previously mentioned, the power points are posted online, so if you miss one class, it is really not that big of a deal.

7. The papers you will write have to be 10+ pages.

While this is definitely true for some classes/professors, it isn't true for all of them. I have had a couple professors that won't let you write more than 3 pages. This is a blessing and a curse.

College is so much fun, and so much better than high school. Don't let some high school teacher make you scared for college; it is so different than what they say.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
