The LGBTQ+ community has intertwined with pop culture through a variety of different broadcasts. Music, however, is one that I believe is constantly overlooked. Whether it's an ally or someone who identifies as LGBTQ+, they show their support through song.
1. Save Rock and Roll - Fall Out Boy
This punk band teamed up with out and proud Elton John and the message is clear. "You are what you love, not who loves you," says it all. The song came as a comfort to both their fanbase waiting patiently for their return from hiatus and to their fanbase of the LGBTQ+ community who just needed the support.
2. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Same Love (ft. Mary Lambert)
With 161 million views as of Oct. 2016, this song rocked the radio airwaves for almost all of 2012. The song was written allegedly for Macklemore's support of the LGBTQ+ community and his Uncle John and his partner Sean. The song was also written in reference of Washington Referendum 74 which was a bill that was proposed for Same-Sex Marriage in Washington. Mary Lambert is heard on this track singing the hook to her song "She Keeps Me Warm."
3. Follow Your Arrow - Kacey Musgraves
It doesn't get any more subtle than this. When I first heard this song I felt super excited that this was a song that would represent Country as a genre for me. When the song released in 2013 with the line ".. make lots of noise and kiss lots of boys – or lots of girls, if that's something you're into," Musgrave faced a lot of backlash and was accused of "attacking Christianity" with her "shift in Country music."
4. Girls/Girls/Boys - Panic! At The Disco
This song was written by Panic! At The Disco's Dallon Weekes and Brendon Urie. The song's line, "Girls love girls and boys, and love is not a choice," is accompanied by many other lyrics that suggest this song is about bisexuality. The bridge even pokes at "not being able to choose a side" then looping into the reason being because girls simply love both and that's the point of bisexuality.
