A Letter To My Brothers

I kind of hate you, but I guess I love you too.

I have three brothers that I have spent between 12 and 19 years with (because of when they were born and when I was born). However, I do not think I have ever taken the time to sit down and actually tell them things of importance. We spent our time, instead playing video games and beating each other up, like most siblings.

Dear Oldest Brother,

You are taller, older and significantly stronger. This has had quite an effect over the years. You always got to be in charge and no siblings could dare to challenge you because you could take down the three of us younger siblings quite easily. I hated that fact because I always wanted to be in charge and I thought you using your athleticism to take power was unfair.

However, now that I am the eldest sibling living in the house, I realize some of the power is in respect to the fact that you are the oldest. I cannot really use your strength thing because the younger two are rapidly becoming stronger. I am also super jealous that you are by far the best singer in the family and cannot believe you never liked choir (you would have been a star in the choir).

I love that growing up, you listened to music that I thought was strange because it inspires my own musical taste now. When you finally moved out of the house, I had the basement all to myself. That was nice for a while, but then I realized how quiet it was and that I had no one to bother. You finally leaping into the adult world made me realize that soon this basement will be completely empty as I too will have to find my way into the world eventually. You were the first one to do everything which showed me how much I accomplished. When we were younger I wanted to do everything you did because I knew I could learn so much from you (and I thought it was cool). I never thanked you for anything you did and for that I am sorry. So thank you!

Love,

Your Annoying Little Sister

Dear Middle Brother,

You have always been a pain in my bum because when you came along, it meant I was no longer the baby. I mean, I was still a baby so I do not actually remember being the youngest, but I still resent you for it. Even though you are the world’s biggest pain, you are probably the sibling that I have always been closest to, that is probably because we are so close in age. We have a mutual love of watching movies, so that is cool. Honestly though, could you turn the TV down every once in a while?

It is super annoying to be able to hear what you are watching from my room. I want you to know I am definitely not sorry for all the snaps you have been the star of, with or without your knowledge. Thanks for being a pal and helping to move all of my college stuff back home. Stop getting taller! It is not fair that you are younger and taller. I demand you stop growing and start shrinking right this second! You are even lazier than I am, which is hard to believe, as I am a college student with no job for the summer and you are a high school student still. You should still have some ambition left kiddo! Even though sometimes I cannot stand you (and your stinky feet), I will never really hate you because middle children must stick together.

Love,

The Other Middle Child

Dear Youngest Brother,

What can I say about you? You are the youngest kid in the family and you are a brat! Done.

OK that is not all, but those things are true. You too are starting to get taller, but you are not allowed to be taller than me because I am selfish and refuse to be the shortest sibling! You are getting older and your intelligence is starting to show. I am proud of you for trying in school and sports. I do hate that you spend so much time on your XBox though because I want to watch Netflix. Also, you need to learn to cook this summer because you are almost 13. You are not a tiny child anymore. Learn to do your laundry too. It is a good life skill to have.

Love, Your Only Sister/Most Helpful Sibling

I love you hoodlums because we are family and you put up with me. You guys are super annoying, but I could not ask for better siblings.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
