An Open Letter To My Parents

Dear mom and dad... You've sacrificed a lot in your lives, so that I wouldn't have to sacrifice anything in mine. Thank you.

Dear Mom and Dad,

Words cannot express the gratitude that I have towards the two of you. Ever since I was a little girl, y’all have been there for every aspect of my life. Whether it was a parent function at school or attending a competition, you two were there for it all. I would not be the young lady I am today without either of you. Now, I will be going off to college in a few months and I can see the impact it has already had on each of you, so there are a few things I want the two of you to know.

Y’all did good.

I know it’s a little scary for me to be leaving home. Honestly, I’m a little terrified, but y’all taught me well. I may not know everything about life yet, because there are some things I just have to learn on my own, but both of you taught me enough to get started. You taught me that life is hard no matter who you are and you have to work hard for what you get. You taught me not to depend on anyone else to help me through life, because that isn’t how it works in the real world. You taught me the importance of being responsible and to take certain things in life seriously, but not everything. You taught me not to be so stressed out about the things I can’t control. You also taught me to be happy, because happiness is the key to living a great life.

I’m so thankful for the life you have given me.

Y’all have always done everything you possibly can to give me a great life and you have. I’m so thankful for the things you have gone out of your way to do for me. I would have never been exposed to the many opportunities I have without the two of you. Now, I will be the first one in the history of our family to ever go to college. I truly couldn’t have done it without both of you pushing me to do my best and to succeed in life. Y’all have given me the most amazing life and now, my only hope is to make you guys proud.

I will always be y’alls little girl.

I may be growing up and moving off to college, but that doesn’t and won’t change anything between any of us. I will still be your little girl, just a little bit older. We will still have all of our inside jokes. We will still be the goofy family we have always been. Nothing will ever change between us, because that is how strong our bond is. You two are such a major part of my life and y’all always will be, no matter how old I get. I will always need both of you.

I love y’all.

I know I say those three words to the both of you, a lot; but I feel like I will never be able to say it enough. Y’all have had such a huge impact in the way I have lived my life. Y’all are the most inspirational people I know. I would be living right if I have half the heart each of you do. I couldn’t have asked for better parents. God truly blessed me by letting me be your guys’ daughter. Thank you for being the parents you are. I love y’all.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
