Dear Urban Dictionary users,
As a member of the sorority Alpha Gamma Delta, I decided to go online to your site and see what kind of definitions popped up under the word “sorority." I found about four paragraphs on the subject and here is a summary of what I read: Sorority girls are a bunch of sluts who belong to a useless “brothel” and who can’t do anything but f*** frat boys and pay to get friends.
I read this definition and I became so livid that I actually began shaking. The idea that anyone believes this is an honest description of us makes me sick. Here’s the truth: sororities are honored organizations in which admirable women join together to support each other, and push one another to become the best individuals they can be, both in terms of academics, work, and serving the community. Sororities were begun as academic organizations across college campuses in the late 1800s and early 1900s during a time that sexism existed. The founders of the various sororities created them in order to give women a chance to come together as a group to empower girls everywhere and prove to the world the strength and ability that females have. We honor these incredible, brave women by pledging to be kind, strong, selfless women with dignity, class, and a commitment to hard work. A good GPA, a passion for volunteer work and various extra-curriculars are crucial for getting into a sorority, and sorority girls spend a great deal of time being sure that their members uphold the ideals of integrity. So no, we don’t pay for our friends; we carefully choose the women we want to grow with.
The positive impact that sororities have had on the world is astonishing. The Sigma Kappa’s focus their philanthropy projects around Alzheimer’s Disease awareness, research and treatment and these women have done so much for people all across the United States suffering from Alzheimer’s that the official Alzheimer’s color is Sigma Kappa’s signature color: purple! So we’re useless, are we? Helping millions of people across the globe who are suffering from disease and pain? Yeah, us sorority girls, we’re such b*tches.
So, people who wrote those definitions on Urban Dictionary, I feel sorry for you. I feel sorry for you because you are so immature that you feel the need to make flash judgements, listen to the lies society spits at you, and go online to make generalizations about women who devote their lives to upholding the most honorable traits a woman, and a person, can possibly have.
From a very disappointed and angry sorority woman,
Hadeley Overaker
