A Letter To My First True Love: Dance

You never know what activities can teach you.

A Letter To My First True Love: Dance
Brooke Greenberg

To my first true love: dance,

You entered my life at three years old when my mom signed me up for Mommy and Me dance classes. I never knew it was something I was so passionate about, it was just mundane and my natural instinct to sign up for classes every year.

Over the years, you allowed me to explore all areas of you including ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical, modern, contemporary and hip hop. Each aspect of you I loved more than the last. Although the first 10 years of my life, I was just a basic dance recreation student, I am so glad to have the experience that would lead to my life changing passion: Competition.

At age 11, I waltzed onstage for the first time in a dance competition. Performing in front of judges was intimidating to my young self, but was incredibly exhilarating. Knowing I got to share my love for you to people of all ages and even just to put a smile on their faces for the short 2 and a half minutes meant the world to me.

Over the past 5 years as a competitive dancer, you have changed and became my life. I have learned how to work as a teammate, and dance as a soloist. I have not only learned that it is perfectly okay to fail, but expected as it makes you a better performer, dancer and person. The life lessons you have given to me are indispensable and something I have learned so early in life compared to my peers.

Learning to dance is a lot like learning to ride a bike. Cliche, I know, but it really is true. You grow, you fall, you stumble, but you always get back up. By allowing you to grant me that opportunity to grow as a person, but also get to do it while dancing is priceless.

Over the past 15 years, you have allowed me to explore every aspect of you: judgement free. You did not judge when I forgot a dance on stage, did not judge when I won a special award and did not judge when I switched dance studios.

You have taught me how to be human and it’s okay to mess up, succeed and sometimes fall somewhere in between. And for that, I am forever grateful.

Love,

A very appreciative dancer

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
