When we were all just little kids, the only thing on our minds was what games we would be playing that day. We worried about taking naps or what snack we would be eating. Some of us weren’t that fortunate. Some of us worried about big kid things, because we didn’t get to enjoy our childhood.
When I was a kid, my life was not perfect. I didn’t have the perfect, white picket fence family growing up. I grew up going back and forth from my mom’s house to my dad’s house to each of my grandparents'. I spent a lot of time bouncing from house to house and never really knowing where I would be staying that night. I had a little sister, but we didn’t get to spend that much time together due to me bouncing around and the fact that we had different dads.
This is for the kids who got their childhoods ruined for them. The kids who didn’t get to enjoy playing dress up or monster trucks. To the kids who hated when their friends yelled at their parents because you knew what it felt like to not be so fortunate. To the kids who knew way too much about life way too early.
We grew up relying on ourselves before relying on anyone else. I am very thankful for the way I grew up, though. I feel like it made me a more mature person in the end and made me who I am today. The ones who grew up too fast always have a different outlook on life and will always be waiting on everyone else to catch up.
This letter is for all of the kids whose childhood was cut a little short. We are strong and independent, and we deserve a break every once in a while. This is a letter of acknowledgment for everything that we have accomplished. You always have room to grow and appreciate making mistakes. It sucks to have to act like a grownup when you’re only a kid. Now that you’re older, always remember that it is OK to act like a kid sometimes.
