A Thank You To My Roommates
Meg flaherty

I know what you're thinking. This is just another cliché letter to a girl's roommates. It's going to be sappy and its going to be like every other “open letter” you have read. Wrong. This letter is to my roommates. My roommates are unlike any other people I have ever met. We've had our ups and downs, and we've gone through the highs and lows together. Without them, sophomore year would feel impossible.

Dear Roommates,

I don't really know where to start, or how to word this, but I wanted to thank you for everything you have done for me and each other over the past seven months. Moving in this year, I barely knew a two of you, and I was best friends with the others. But I now can proudly say I have five of the best friends I could ever ask for. Without further ado, here are just a few (of of many) things that I want to thank you for.

Thank you for being the best therapists.

I mean seriously. How many problems do six girls have? Let me answer that one for you: A LOT. Thank you for always listening to my complaints, whether it be I can't perfect my winged eyeliner, or a bad test grade, you guys are always there for me to whine to.

Thank you for being open minded.

As you (hopefully) know by now, I'm extremely open minded. I enjoy doing random things out of the blue and I'm not one sided. Living with you guys this past year has opened so many new doors for all of us. Because of you, I have done so many things that have broadened my horizons, and I owe that all to you.

Thank you for having the same sense of humor as me.

Even though I'm a little weird at times, you guys always understand my jokes. I can't even imagine what it would be like to live with people who don't have my sense of humor. I mean, can you imagine making a stupid joke and have no one even cock their head thinking “what...”? That is a world I never want to live in.

Thank you for having the same music taste as me.

Okay this one is true for some of us. But generally, thank you for showing me your new music and for allowing me to show you mine. I love discovering new sounds and new artists, and six people giving me those new people makes a world of a difference.

Thank you for letting me be me.

None of you have ever tried to change who I am, or who anyone else is. I can't thank you enough for accepting my weirdness, my flaws, and my personality. Friends like you are one in a million.

Thank you for Monday night Bachelor nights and Thursday night Grey's Anatomy nights.

These days are my favorite of the whole week. They're literally designated girls nights and I could not love them any more. These nights look a little like this:

Thank you for helping me through the sophomore slump.

Let's be real. Sophomore year is really dragging. Summer is only one and a half months away and we're all just about ready for summer. We all know how long a Monday can feel and how short a weekend feels. Thank you for pushing me through my bad days and being with me on the good ones.

Thank you for being honest.

Whether it's about an outfit or a boy, every single one of your opinions matters to me. You've helped me make decisions I couldn't make on my own. You've been there for my tears, laughter and everything in-between. All of this is due to your honesty.

Whether it's sitting in one of our bedrooms talking about life, going on long drives throughout the city, or going to family dinners, I can't thank you five girls enough. Can't wait for the next two years with you guys.

Xoxo,

Me

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
