When I became a resident assistant there were only a few things I knew about the job; what I didn’t know is how much it would change my life. I didn’t realize the friendships I would make, how my co-workers would turn into family, but most importantly how much my residents would impact me. So here’s to my residents the past, the present, and the future.
Dear Residents,
My mind goes back to move-in day. As you timidly moved in, I introduced myself to you and your family not knowing the impact you would have in my life. I could see the chats we would have in the future about school, home, and your dreams. I was prepared to answer any question you had and deal with any situation you brought to me. As the weeks passed I saw you grow, make friends, and take whatever life threw at you. You got a taste of what the real world was like, but you didn’t back down; instead you handled it with grace and maturity (most of the time).
As the year comes to an end, I want you to know, I am so proud of you. You made it through another year of ups and downs. You overcame challenges that were thrown at you, challenges that no one else knew about. You learned to problem solve, to time manage, and how to grocery shop on a budget. You grew. You matured. You started to find your place in this world. You set goals and you met them. You worked hard and didn’t let anything stop you. You made mistakes, but you learned from them. You battled the hangovers and still managed to get to class. You learned how to be on your own and succeeded. You have come a long way and you will go so far.
I also want to say thank you. Thank you for pushing me to be a better RA, a better person, a better me, so I can better you. Thank you for inspiring me. Thank you for the random notes of encouragement, hugs, and dance parties in the hallway. Thank you for making everything I do worth it. Thank you for being my reward on tough days. Thank you for understanding the things I do are not to get you in trouble, but what I do because I care. Thank you for brightening my day. Thank you for reminding me why I love what I do. Most importantly, thank you for being you.
A few things I want you to remember: I will always be here for you, whether you transfer schools or move across campus. I will always be a text away. I care about you. More than you know. Even if we didn’t get along too well or if I wrote you up; I want what is best for you, and I always will. You are capable of succeeding. I believe in you. Always shoot for your dreams; you can and will succeed. Never give up, and you will surprise yourself with what you can do if you just push yourself. I may not be your RA, but I will always be your friend.
All my love,
Your RA
