An Open Letter To My Person

All the things I've learned from you.

An Open Letter To My Person
Kara E Brown

To my person,

Not every relationship is guaranteed a fairytale ending, but sometimes you just might believe you've finally found your person. I ran into you unexpectedly, not knowing how much of an impact you would truly have on my life. I always believed everyone when they told me that the best things in life will come to you once you stop hunting for them, and they were completely right. There are so many things I've already learned from you that I would not have gained from anyone else.

You've shown me the meaning of truly cherishing the time with someone once again. Whether we're hanging out on an old-fashioned coffee date or going for a hiking adventure in the mountains, we never feel forced to keep a constant conversation going. Being in the presence of one another creates enough enjoyment out of the time we get to spend together that we never have to create anything more.

You've shown me how doing the little things in a relationship can go a long way. Three weeks ago when I got back from a vacation, I spent an hour constantly complaining about how I left my hairbrush back at home. I could not explain the amount of joy I experienced when you pulled a hairbrush from Target out of your backpack before class later that day. I've learned that it's not about the size of the gifts or the amount of money you spend, it's about whether or not you remember that they hate sushi or that they hate when you respond 'sure' instead of 'yes.'

You've shown me the importance of living a life full of adventure. Before I had the privilege of crossing paths with you, 'spontaneous' was never a word in my vocabulary. You could say I'm a goody-two-shoes who always plays by the rules. You came along and suddenly I discovered the adrenaline rush of staying up until 5 in the morning when you have an 8 am class or how enjoyable the silence of the night can truly be. A life full of experience and opportunity is a life worth living, especially when you have the right person by your side.

You've shown me how important it is to chase my dreams. You have been my number one fan since the day we met and have been encouraging me ever since. Every opportunity that has come my way, you've always demanded that I give it a try because the worst thing that could happen is rejection. I've had the opportunity to grow so much as a person all because of your positive, supportive words that helped me through all of my falls. You always believe that no dream of mine is too big for me to achieve and I will be forever thankful for someone as encouraging as you.

You've shown me the key to a successful life is balance. We both have a secure understanding that we both want to spend as much time together as possible, but we cannot put our hectic schedules on hold forever. You have taught me that you do not need to be in constant communication with someone in order to know they're still there. When you have an inseparable bond with someone special, you always know they hold a place in their heart for you.

And finally, you've shown me that fairytale endings do exist. I never thought I would meet a person who could play every role I'd ever need throughout my life: a best friend, a role model, a supporter, a hero. Life is too short to spend it with the wrong people, and I am more than blessed to say that I've found my person. Thank you for being you.

Love always,

Your Biggest Fan

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
