A Letter To My Past Self

You've learned a lot.

Hey me,

Congrats! You just finished your first semester of college.

You've changed a lot in these past four months. You've met so many people it makes your head spin, and it's hard to keep their names straight. You got a job while juggling five classes and a social life. I don't know how you did it, but you're strong, so it's really no surprise. You are a special kind of superwoman.

You had fun this semester. You went out with your friends and had the time of your life, as well as discovering a lot about yourself. But, let me warn you, next semester things won't get easier. You'll find yourself juggling more work and people than ever. You're going to test your limits and work even harder.

Next semester, you're going to decide you want another major to add on top your already crazy schedule, because you're that much of an overachiever. You're going to want to change it again down the road, then change your mind again and keep it. You. Are. Nuts.

You might come out with slight heartbreak, but as usual, it helps you in the end. You'll apply for that RA position and get all the way to end and not get it, but you will get the job you've been wanting since you toured the school, and you'll love every second of it.

Now self, let me tell you, as hard as next semester is going to seem, you have no idea what's in store for you in your second year of college: five classes, three jobs, and a boyfriend (he's great, trust me). You might think you're going to lose your mind, but we're strong and unstoppable.

In the end, though, you'll come out reinvigorated for the next year. Exciting things are up ahead; you don't even know. You had your year of craziness and goofing off, but now it's time to get serious about the real world. As I write this, we're almost halfway done with college (really weird, I know). Time has gone so fast that it's becoming scary.

While this is a letter to my past self and all the accomplishments I've had thus far, it's also a letter to my future self. I don't know what the future holds, but I expect it to be great. I have no doubt that it will be hard, but like I said before, you're strong, and can do pretty much anything you set your mind to.

So, dear future self, don't be so hard on yourself and push through. Don't listen to what others have to say if it's going to be negative. You are an almost overly optimistic person, and that's going to get you through just about everything coming ahead.

Also, one last thing, self: Don't give up on your dreams. While that may be vague and can mean a lot of things, you know what I'm talking about. Keep on dreaming and don't let go. Your life is really just beginning, and knowing us, we won't let it be anything other than bright.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
