A Letter To My Six Year Old Niece

Dear Zoe,

Hola Cochina! Today you finished your last day of kindergarten and moving on to first grade. Where has time gone? It seems like yesterday I was holding you in my arms while you were wrapped up like a burrito in your little pink blanket. You're growing up so fast! Rumor has it, you've lost your first two teeth!

Zoe, I'm so proud of everything you've accomplished within the past six years. I love listening to you read stories to me and sing and dance. You're doing so great in gymnastics I'm so happy you have decided to stick with it! Maybe one day you'll give soccer another chance... Haha. Either way, I love seeing the smile on your face when you're out there doing hand stands and cartwheels. You've started swimming lessons and I'm so excited to go to the pool this summer and watch you swim your little heart out.

You're six years old and you've already traveled out of the country to one of the most beautiful countries in the world, Peru. I hope one day we can make that trip to Peru together!

Cochina, you may be one of the sassiest, or in abuela's words "diva," six year old I know, but I love hearing you rip me a new one whenever I miss your FaceTime calls or don't sing and dance with you to Selena Gomez or Taylor Swift. I don't think you realize how happy you make me, Zoe. I hope one day you'll look back at this letter and know how much you mean to Selena and I. Thank you for the pictures you painted and left for us as we left for college. I hung them up on my desk and looked at them every time I missed you.

I hate being away at college and missing some of your school accomplishments and your gymnastics practices, but I love seeing all your pictures and videos on Facebook. You're doing a wonderful job taking care of Abuela and keeping Abuelo in line while Selena and I are gone. I know that they just can't get enough of you!

Te extraño muchísimo Zoe Yvonne! Today was my last day of my sophomore year and I'm beyond excited to spend the summer with you.

Te quiero con todo mi corazón Cochina,

Tia Stephanie.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
