Dear Straight Hair,
We were inseparable. We met when I was in eighth grade. My hair was so curly. People weren’t used to curly hair so they would make fun of me. There was nothing I could do; I couldn’t find the right products to tame my mane. But you changed that. It took me only moments to decide that straight hair was for me. I went to the salon and we were inseparable. When we showed up to school together people were awestruck. We looked amazing together. Suddenly people wanted to talk to us, we were getting invited to go out, and I seemed more confident. If my curly roots started to come out, you would grab your straightener and try to hide it. We would touch up once a year and every time we would leave the salon we would look stunning.
You and I kept a stable relationship through high school until one night when I washed you. You were weak and broke down in the tub. Your remains flowed down the drain and I thought it was normal. The next morning you looked thinner, you were sick. And it looked like I got a blind haircut. I grew out my curly hair and straightened it by hand. I washed you with special shampoo and it finally grew back out. I went back to the salon and we were reunited again. But you started getting sick again. We made the decision; it was time for us to depart.
In college I tried to keep you as straight as possible. But you just got sicker. It was time for us to depart for the last time. I started growing out my curly hair again. I’m sorry but it was one of the best decisions I have made since, well you. You made me appreciate who I actually am. I found hair products that could keep my curls at ease. With the support of my friends and family, they showed me that I’m still beautiful even with my curly hair. I made the decision to cut the rest of you off when I got home from college. Now I can walk around and not worry about my hair. Thank you for everything, you have changed my life forever.
Best Regards,
The Girl With Curly Hair
